I've been hearing a lot of rumors today that Pitt has agreed to become the 12th member of the Big Ten. Anyone heard anything about it?

I heard it too, but IMO I'd like to see:

1. Texas
2. ND

3. Rutgers
4. Syracuse
5. Nebraska
6. Missouri
7. UCONN
8. Pitt
9. Iowa St
10. Kansas
11. West Virginia

So, the Big Ten East would be Pitt, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, and Indiana/Purdue, while the Big Ten West would be the other of Indiana/Purdue, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois? Boy, that's going to be a BORING conference in the West for football!

No problem here if Pitt is in...only thing...NE Ohio will now be a war in regards to recruiting with OSU & Pitt

I don't see how it will be any different in terms of recruiting. Nothing is stopping Pitt now.

So would their basketball team join the Big 10 as well? Because that would be the dumbest thing they could do...Go from the strongest league to a middle of the pack league with a couple of good teams.

I know Pitt recruits well now in the NE Oh region...but given the coaches the ability to tell potential players..play in Big East or Big Ten in football..I think will sway some kids. Using that as a recruiting can only help Pitt.
Now basketball...tiger brought up a good point...this probably would not help them that much, but I do see it aiding them in football recruiting

I believe it would be all sports.

Well the announcement was supposed to be yesterday. Didn't happen. Looks like the rumor, at least as of right now, isn't true. Wouldn't be surprised to see something in a few months though.

ESPN radio today reported that the Big Ten has talked to Texas about joining the league.

I hope that's true. I know Texas isn't exactly happy with the way the money is split in the Big 12. I know it would mean LONG trips, but Texas is the kind of home run the Big Ten needs. Just imagine the audience a conference title game between OSU and Texas could bring in. Plus they're good in football, basketball, AND baseball, and could single handedly put Big Ten baseball back on the map.

I doubt that it works out, but that to me is the ideal scenario at this point.

Here is an interesting link. Some very good points made. You need to think of the Big 11 expanding from a university President's view and not a sports fan.

If you read the article above you'll see the travel expenses to Texas would hardly be an issue for the schools with revenues they make from tv contracts with the big ten network and others almost doubling. Adding Texas would be a good business decision for the Big 11 TEN, almost better then Notre Dame. sadbanana.gif
