Just checked the OHSAA website for the attendance figures for the state finals held on Saturday....

D4....a tad over 5,000

D3....no report

D2....3,000 and change

D1....3,000 and then some

so giving the D3 championship game a 4,000 "grade" it looks like the totals for the finals was roughly 15,000 fans..

or in other words, the same as for a good state final game for 1 boys game....wouldn't it be much more economical
for the OHSAA to just schedule the girls tournament at some nice mid-college, or bigger high school arena?...watching
the games on STO was much like watching the state football finals at OSU stadium.....playing before a house that
was less than a 1/3 capacity takes something away from the atmosphere I would think....thoughts?

Why is this on the Boys Basketball Forum?

There was all kinds of complaining about the potential for a bad atmosphere for the games at Ohio Stadium. Turns out most people thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere for the games there. I watched some of the state finals on STO. Really didn't notice the crowds much.

I see what you are saying, rocketman, but with the whole gender equality stuff and the fact the OHSAA is comfortable with the current venue I don't see it being changed any time soon. These girls, like the boys, deserve to play on the Ohio St. floor for a state championship.

St Johns arena has a date with the wrecking ball in the very near future as the various venues that use the facility( ie volleyball, fencing, gymnastics, and wrestling.) will be moving to the Covelli Arena which will be located at the intersection of Fred Taylor Drive and Ackerman Roads and is to be constructed this year. Paid for mostly by a substantial donation from Sam Covelli totalling around 10 million this facility will hold 4,000 people for the above mentioned sports. Not suppose to hold any basketball games for the womans program at OSU, but you gotta believe the floor will have the basketball lines in case of need. Maybe this could be a solution? More then likely this facility will be similar to the Stroh Center at BGSU which is plenty big for girls basketball and was used the other year for the NCAA basketball tournament for the women. This place could be a possibility down the road, just remains to be seen.

Why would you not allow the girls to play in the same arena as the boys? Screams Title 9.

Why does it matter to YOU if the girls play at The Schott, what it looks like on tv, etc. The girls play hard all year long just like the boys. They practice the same amount of time, if not more, than the boys. The egotistical comments about the girls playing somewhere OTHER than at Ohio State is absurd. The feeling is like no other (trust me I have been there) and its what little girls dream of doing when they are playing in their driveway. And some of you commenting about this are too "cool" and don't even go to the girls games-so again why does it even matter to YOU? Get out of the 1950's... its 2015.

Leave it where it is....the fans from the schools that are playing get to sit close to the floor....and the girls get to play in the same arena as Ohio State and the boys. 4500 fans from the two competing schools is about the same as the (half the fans at the boys games are administrators and casual fans). The crowds were just as loud as they are for the boys.....no reason to move it.

I didn't take it as a shot at the girls at all. If I was a high school athlete, I would rather play in a packed, loud 5,000 seat gym. It might be better for all involved to move it, unless people really care about playing at the Schott in a bad atmosphere.

Another thing to take into consideration... how many people at the boys state tourney are just casual observers? Not many causal observers at the girls state tourney.

If there are 5,000 people at a girls game, maybe 1000 of them are "casual" fans. At the boys event, it's typically over half of the crowd. The boys have been averaging 10K, so roughly the same amount of true fans are attending. I heard a couple girls games on the radio....and it seemed like it was just as loud....if not louder than a boys game

I've been to several girls state tourney games at Value City Arena. There was tremendous atmosphere for those games. And the atmosphere for the football finals in Ohio Stadium reportedly had great atmosphere as well. I'm not sure why anyone feels the need to change the venues.

If there were 5,300 at the OG semi-final game then if you had that game at the Stroh Center about 900 people could not have attended. The Stroh Center only seats 4,400 for basketball.

Why does $10 get you two girls games and $12 one boys game? Why is the girls ball smaller? Why, because there's a difference and maybe it would be best to move the girls games to an arena that would be more cost beneficial and still do the job. There's nothing wrong with that. That $12 boys ticket helps pay for the use of the Schott for girls basketball.

I'm glad that you agree with me that there's a difference. Just like I posted. It was just sad that it wasn't until the early 80s that it was figured out.

Not just the kitchen. I hope women are just as handy in other rooms of the house as we'll.

I've also been to many girls basketball games at Value City Arena and the atmosphere is horrible. The only division worthwile for "atmosphere" is usually D4 b/c they bring the enitre town.

I would say move it as well.
The Nutter Center would be good just like they do for volleyball.

Should we bitch and moan about why the girls play vball at the Nutter?? NO.

It's about the kids if it makes close to financial sense.

If the girls want to play in an empty Schott, let them. If they want to play in a more crowded BG or Nutter, let them do that as well. I would like the smaller, more crowded gym, but what do I know?
