As a player I would have a hard time accepting our coach telling us we have no chance to win unless we do something drastically different than we did in our other 20 games during the season.

I think the strategy can be successful but very hard to implement for 1 game, particularly with what I think is a team that doesn't handle the ball particularly well. I think Arlington had the guns to give it a real go with their posts and shooting. Wonder if the strategy would be different if they played at Arlington? Maybe their kids were too tired after the JV game to give it a real go (just joking)?

Very frustrating to watch when teams put good varsity players on the JV team as most players on girls JV teams in the area won't significantly contribute at the varsity level in the future, let alone be able to compete with some of the top scorers/rebounders/ 3 pt. shooters on the varsity team in the present year. Having said that, I would prefer they do this than not have a JV team when numbers are an issue. If Arlington only had a varsity team, some of those kids would barely play this year and other teams would lose a game.
Some teams only put a kid down on JV for a quarter (or limit their quarters) and then don't play them in the varsity game (game after game). I find that to be more frustrating as a fan.

Holding the basketball is a legitimate and difficult skill and strategy that can be used in basketball. It simply shortens the game and allows one team who thinks it may not be able to play straight up with another team to stay in the game as long as possible. Holgate's boys program was very successful doing this for about 30 years under Paul Wayne. Won a state title and made it to regionals many times playing that way.
Common sense:Holgate did do a great job of holding the basketball during the tournament or if a league title were on the line. Arlington couldn't win the bvc, why not let the girls play to better prepare for tournament? I doubt that is going to be their game plan once the tourney starts.
