From what I heard. Mauk wanted to be rehired at same pay as he was receiving. Board said sorry and he got mad then things got personal. That's when he decided to leave. I think the board did the correct thing.

Matches what I heard about the pay/retire/rehire. I have no opinion on whether the board did the correct thing.

So, IF true, Tom Brim and Mark McCullough are going to let a person this valuable to the school and students walk away over ~$10k. Idiots!

Hell, the school makes that much money selling 10-0 shirts every year!

10K- maybe just for football.

Is Kenton AD an administrative contract? If someone would retire/rehire at the same pay for an administrative contract you're looking at 80K +.

Then add the football stipend onto that.

Not sure I understand. His retirement will come from the state, not the school. They will hire someone to be AD and someone to be the football coach. What the school would get is not having to pay for health insurance for the AD position, as I believe the state picks that up in retirement.

Wow. He wanted the same salary. Wouldn't you like to have the same at your job. Don't talk about the retirement thing either. I love how board members act like it is their money to give out. His retirement pay has nothing to do with the athletic budget. Believe it our not. Football coaches salaries are usually not a strain on the budget because football pays for itself and usually funds the other sports programs as well.

Yes it does....if you're Ohio State.....lol. HS football doesn't pay for itself.......not even close.

That's what is so frustrating. These elected officials act like the money is coming out of their pocket. I have news for them. The state is still going to tax you either way.

I am not talking about covering the ad and teaching contract of the coach but they supplementals are more than paid for.

I would hope that every board member at every school would act like this. It's called fiscal responsibility.

Paperboy. It is actually called having their own selfish agenda. If they were fiscally responsible they wouldn't waste money on sports programs that didn't pay their own way.

A high school football program doesn't bring in enough money to cover all the expenses associated with it.....coaches, equipment, travel, field expenses, etc. Yes, Kenton getting 4 or 5 playoff games per year helps out quite a bit with additional income...but in a typical school district, football doesn't come close to covering the costs associated with it.

He wont answer that one. If all school boards acted with fiscal integrity in mind, football and boys basketball is all that would be played at the HS level. He's been listening to way too much right wing radio.

I believe you said "if you're OSU", as if Kenton's football program doesn't pay for itself. Kenton doesn't even need the 4 or 5 playoff games to cover the cost of football. Gate receipts alone make the football program very profitable. keep tryin.

Coach Mauk's wife backed up what was printed in The Times. She broke her silence on FB last night. Nothing came out about personal statements made by the board or otherwise.

Here's my issue....the timeline doesn't work out.

When Mauk walked into the board meeting, he already had the offer from Mizzou. This means that he had to have inquired, interviewed, and then been offered the job in Missouri. The board meeting was January 6th.

That's a lot to have had worked out since the end of the football season? People act like this is ALL on the school board. HOWEVER, if Mauk ALREADY had something on his plate since December, that isn't all on the board. He has had it in his mind to already possibly leave. The trump card was played and it backfired.

I cannot fault him for leaving, I understand the complexities of the Ohio Retirement System. I wish him the best and thank him for his service as football coach for so many years.

Ada lost a great one last year, people thought the world had ended. Ada makes a great hire and things are back to where they were.

I'm actually hopeful for a few more changes in Kenton athletics.

This thread is about Kenton football, Tom. Not "in a typical school district".

As for retire/rehire....

When teachers return as a "retire/rehire", they usually go back to the standard "Base Salary" at step one. This benefits the district financially as they would have to find a kid fresh out of college to save that kind of money. This is likely why the District said "No". They wouldn't save any money. Granted, they would lose Mauk, but it reads as if that was already a possibility.

Kitna, he has done a fine job. The kids say that he runs a tighter ship and has made some changes in play calling, but the result is still good! I don't know him personally, but I didn't know Fell either.
