Hopefully this is the ultra talented class you claim it is. Otherwise the "everyone shoots" philosophy is a dangerous one at such a small school. Odds are some of them shouldn't be shooting. The good/sad thing about it is that in today's poorly parented world, that style is usually supported by the majority. The talented/competitive kid and his parents might be frustrated when the guys who aren't as skilled are jacking up shots from all over the court, but the parents of kids who aren't as good but get equal opportunity always love it! I find it disgusting at the number of parents who would rather little Johnny get free reign to shoot on a bad team than have to be a role, or god forbid, bench player on a winning team! Know nothing of the kids and their talent level at Holgate or the mentality of the parents... I just speak in general sense. Unless you get a whole group of kids to commit to developing their skill level, it's a dangerous plan to use the equal opportunity system. There is a reason football coaches don't hand the ball off to the offensive linemen, and there is a reason the 5'0" 95 lb kid isn't on the offensive line. Why is it when we move inside for hoops everyone thinks they need to be treated equally? Lack of skill is the same as lack of size or speed. Doesn't mean you can't play, just means you have a different role as the skilled kid!

They have all the makings if the 04 team but I think that they will play 4 on 5 on offense like what Leipsic did but not utilizing the post

Bball Coach 10

You've just summed up why Paul Wayne is no longer at Holgate. Except you didn't say what happens when the afore mentioned parents are on the school board.

More talented? By far, more disciplined? Not even close. They have wat more shooters than both state teams, they have way more talented big men the the state team, if the coach uses them, so ya they are by far more talented than the 04' state team. But not nearly as disciplined.

I could be totally wrong and I will be the first to admit to be proved wrong this year if they are successful...but didn't WT boys sweep the GMCs Varsity thru 7th grade this year??? and from what I have seen is that Tinora and WT are the only teams that can really compete this year for the conference in football AND basketball......

On another note..I thought Wayno had his moments where is style worked against a better team cuz it slowed it down in their favor...but when they faced a worse team like Ayresville or Antwerp...they could have easily won by 20..but their style allowed them to stay in the games...say what you want but Holgate should've finished farther in the tourny..just my opinion...

The new run n gun style might back fire but for the next couple years especially the next two I think it will not change holgates competitiveness against any team in the gmc. U believe there is enough talent in the next two classes to be very competitive in any style.

In my opinion, an I coul be very wrong but I think if Holgate goes to state in the near future, it will be in the next two years, next years team especially. They have so much talent in the junior and senior class. The team could use some good old fashioned dicsipline but probably still the best holgate team to come through talent wise in the past 15 years.

From what it seems like though, those classes tended to win JV games with that style cause of the other team's lack of discipline for being frosh/soph. Then when they got to Varsity they always were surpassed by kids who could push the ball, but now had the discipline to break Holgate's sag defense, which was a weird variation of a man/zone mix. (Now you can see why it would confuse a JV player)

In my opinion though, I think they are far from state level. You're saying they have the firepower to get through not only Tinora and WT, but also LCC??? I'll just have to see them prove it to believe it. I hope I'm wrong, another great team will make the GMC even that much more competitive come tourny time.

All three of those teams are not even in holgates division. I think they will still be very competitive with tinora and WT even with the new style. And especially with the division they are in they have a good shot at state, they are very talented, very underestimated I believe. I think people are underestimating this years team because of the new coach and totally new system.

With new enrollment numbers WT should be in D-IV next year, LCC MIGHT be but it probably won't happen. And I meant Tinora and WT from more of a conference title standpoint. Holgate is AT the palace next year...I could see them pulling it out at home against Tinora though.

Lots of respect as a coach for Wayno, even more after reading that article. Someone who coached there that long should be involved with those decisions...Maybe he could apply at Bowling Green High, heard the just let go their coach of 11 years, two days ago.

This new style is all about making shots n getting shots off. What happens when shots don't fall for them? Can they fall back on great defense like they have in the past to keep them in the game? If not they might be getting blown out early in games. What happens when good teams slow it down on them n get back door layups?

That is what Holgate has been doing to teams the past 20-30 years with Wayne... if Holgate wasn't as good they would just make the better team play D... Idk if Holgates players will be accustomed to having to play transition D ALL THE TIME now unlike before.

Nothing official yet. but it sounds like Paul Wayne will be joining Kirk Lehman at Defiance as an assistant.

Sounds like a TERRIFIC idea! Paul will be a definite asset WHEREVER he goes. Kirk and Paul should work well together - hopefully - because Kirk respects Paul and will listen to him. Best of luck to them both.

I hadn't heard that yet. It may add even more interest to the next Holgate-Tinora game.
