Another option: add a group of teams from a neighboring league if one individual school won't join on its own. Take the BVC up to 20 teams and schedule a big school/ small school division format. This expansion plan could potentially include Ada, Columbus Grove, Bluffton, Allen East, Patrick Henry, USV, and Fostoria St. Wendelin. Schools with JV football would be in the big school division and schools without JV football would be in the small school division. For non-football sports, you could just schedule the 10 closest league schools.

Another option: (this would be more difficult to implement) Have the school with the lowest number of team members not play varsity for one year. If they increased their numbers the following year then a different team would be designated non-varsity for that subsequent year.

Kinda like that dropping down thing they do in European soccer. Relegation is it called?

Relegation: It could provide some incentive to schools to commit to improving their programs or to seek other fall sport opportunities (rather than BVC football).

If you're going for 20, go for 28 for spring sport purposes. Its the only way C-R will ever play a full 27 game regular season in softball or baseball.

The far-fetched idea is that any school wants to try to find week 3 thru week 10 non-league opponents if you have 13 teams in your league. The schools (and their supporters) have zero interest driving to Cleveland or Columbus or wherever to fill a hole in the schedule in the later part of the season. Outside of HN (and possibly Vanlue) there is ZERO interest on the part of BVC members in adding USV. Some "outside-the-box" thinking may be required to resolve the current 13 team dilemma. Failure to do so may cause the schools that have other options to leave the BVC.

Not sure where you get your info Horizon but USV does have a JV football program and has had for several years. USV also has Jr. High sports as well.....If the BVC does not want them in fine, but don't make up a bunch of crap as an excuse......

They BVC officials had better make sure that the showers work in the visiting USV locker room before they let them join. A few years ago a visiting basketball team tried to use the showers there and they didn't work. Then USV had the nerve to accuse that team of breaking the showerheads and demanded payment. What a bunch of losers.

My apologies to USV JV football. Any comments made here are certainly not intended as a slam against USV. I have nothing against the school or its district residents. But their distance away from the majority of the schools in the BVC does not make them an attractive addition to the league. Add to that a football program that went 1-9 last year and it would appear that USV is not a viable option for membership in the eyes of the majority of BVC members.

You know I really liked this site until it got to the point when poster do nothing but run other schools down. Excuse the USV school district for trying to put ourselves in what we consider a very respectful league. We really thought that if we could improve the quality of our opponents week in and week out we could also improve overall. I'm pretty sure we played several BVC teams in basketball this past year and competed very well. The record of our football program is not what anyone expected. There are many people who have worked their butts off since the cancled season to bring a better football product onto the field. We had several 4-6 and 5-5 years with one 6-4 year in there and we are just looking to get over that hump. I certainly hope that the few negative posters on here don't represent the entire BVC community. If we don't get in the league fine, we will march on trying to make our district better. I just don't know why people have to get on here and bash our school because of trying to get into their league! Thats all I got to say on this.....

Well said. I do understand why some schools do not want USV but no need to run down a school for trying to get in a league they feel is a better fit.

USV would be a more competitive school than North Baltimore in most sports, and their facilities are better than many BVC schools also.

That is true but location is a big problem for most school where NB is a great location for BVC schools.

If you get into the bvc you'll have to learn about which ones always seem to be "standing up wind of themselves "! Dont worry you'll get use to it.

That must not have been an issue when accepting/inviting Hopewell-Loudan. The trip from Leipsic to USV is actually a minute quicker than the trip to H-L, and only 5 minutes longer than a trip to Riverdale (travel times according to Google maps). USV is as close or closer (time-wise) to HN, Riverdale, Arlington, and even Cory Rawson as a trip to NB would be for any of them, let alone the trip to H-L.

I'm not complaining about the travel...you have to remember, we're used to driving over 70 miles one-way to Lucas, so a 35 mile trip to H-L or a 40 mile trip to Leipsic isn't a big deal (only real complaint you'll hear from me is the fact that these BVC trips have more county and back roads instead of 4-lane highways, making travel SEEM longer than what it actually is).

My point is, if you really look at the map, you'll realize it's not really anything more than what is already there (travel, that is). It all depends on what your perspective is. If you're all cozy in the center of the conference, then I guess anything more than a 20 minute drive is a "long trip".

I'd rather see Carey, Bluffton, or Ada join the BVC...BUT, if none of these schools are willing to join, and USV is...
...beggars can't be choosers.

Hopewell Loudon is a quality school that brings a solid athletic program into the BVC. They have a winning tradition in football and travels well. The intent was to bring in three larger schools with a fan base and a smaller school to appease the bottom half of the BVC. It's unfortuneate that we have not been able to find that third program to go along with Riverdale and H-L. USV is not the answer and I hope the BVC officials do not panic and take in a school that provides little to the league.

I'm beginning to think the top half of the league should have split off and created their own league.

Buckshot: You are correct in your view of the situation in the BVC. We should be adding schools that make the league stronger.

The positive factors we should be seeking in potential new league members:

1) Adjacent to current league districts - the closer to Findlay, the better.

2) Sufficient enrollment numbers - large Div VI or Div V (using the six division format)

3) Solid football program with a degree of success in competing for league titles and/or playoffs. We want schools that will bring in computer points from out-of-conference football wins.

4) Good participation levels for extra-curriculars, with an emphasis on consistently fielding JV football and having a full complement of girls high school and junior high teams

5) Good financial shape for the district to avoid pay-to-play issues and reductions in teams due to financial constraints.

6) A fan base that "travels" well. Ticket sales for football games make up a large chunk of the athletic budgets at most schools. We would prefer to add a school that will bring 250+ fans to a game rather than a school that will bring less than 100.
