I don't understand the coaching is still Wayne's if he wants it they are just not hiring him as a teacher. They are saving money good job by the board

^^ I agree to an extent but if the teachers still want to teach & are competent in their roles, then why not keep them on board? I do feel this is more of a power play by the BOE rather than a financially responsible move. Are the school funds that tight? Might be even tighter if the community speaks & votes down the levy. Penny wise & a dollar poor.

I'm sure that they will have both a teacher and a coach next year, no issue here. Change is good

You understand that Wayne retired, right? If the board can hire a less expensive teacher then it should do so. It sounds like the board did the right thing here by offering to let Wayne keep his coaching job, so I don't get the problem here?

It's not what they did, it's how it was handled. Little warning, no negotiations, just see ya.

I was able to talk with "Wayne O" at this year's regional tournaments at BGSU....he was none too pleased as he knew it already then.....he "could" take his act on the road but I doubt it....

If he is in fact set on doing both tben I see the BOE going in a different direction. For the number of wins the man has he also has to have tbe lowest ppg. avg.... ..

Just WTF does that have to do with anything? His job is to coach his kids to the best of his/their abilities and win games. He, quite simply, does that, with a method that twists some folks' knickers. PLEASE tell me you're not one of those shallow clowns?

Interesting for who? Not the fans or the kid with hopes of playing college basketball after highschool??

Give it a rest. High school basketball wasn't put on this Earth for your entertainment purposes. If you don't care for Holgate's/Wayne's style of play, don't attend games that involve them. Don't try to cloak your stupidity with the "kid with hopes of playing college basketball after high school."

Any fans who would rather lose 70-65 then win 30-28 aren't really fans. And come on, he was talking about Fairview. What do kids looking to get to college have to do with Fairview? Have you seen the kids they have?

Best quote on this thread, minus that shot at the Fairview kids.

I understand that he retired, but to not rehire for cost savings only seems odd to me...especially with the negative response from the community...with a pending school levy coming up. Once again, penny wise & a dollar poor if they levy fails because of backlash from the community.

Won't they need to make a decision soon?? The ball team has to have some camps coming up in the next 3-4 wks. Also, if Wayno & Engel do not come back, what poor sap walks into that mess & takes over??

Again why blame the board it is still Wayne's choice weather to come back as coach. If they do hire a new coach it is because Wayne turned Holgate down. ( not the boards problem )

While Wayno was there he brought in a lot of older guys from the area that had played college ball some have teaching degrees. Also Mankhe's ast. (Hurst) from when he was at Tinora did his student teaching at Holgate this year for his Masters in Math. He was also the freshman coach last year at Holgate. All three boys basketball jobs were posted in the paper this weekend.

I think Hurst was student teaching for his bachelors degree. The coaching jobs were in the paper this weekend. Wayno was never told he couldn't coach. That is his decision.

My sources tell me Wayno is officially done coaching, along with the rest of the staff. Paul still has a desire to coach so don't be surprised if he doesn't turn up at a local school near you

Heard that Tinora, Fairview, and Stryker has called Wayno, he turned all three down. Lehman has also supposedly called him to show Defiance how to play Defense.

last night while we were at Stinkys someone from Leipsic came in around 10:30pm or so..........the conversations turned into how well the Leipsic
teams had done the past school year and how it was nice to see them returning to their former glory in sports......

well, one thing led to another and this guy said that one of their jayvee coaches was leaving Viking-land and heading north up to Holgate to take
on the duties of head basketball coach.........the name mentioned was Closson.......not sure on the first name as I actually just remembered this when
I got up this afternoon..........zooooom

Tyler Closson, former OG basketball player......but probably remembered better as the Quarterback at OG in 2006. Ty still coaches football at OG and was the JV basketball coach at Leipsic last season. Good coach and a good person. Good luck to Coach Closson as Coach Wayne's shoes will be big ones to fill.

Wondering......does he stay with Wayno's deliberate offensive system or do the Holgate Tigers take the 180 degree turn and install Leispic's full court, all out pressure and fast break strategy?
