Regardless, I think this could lead to some not-so-pretty games b/n both teams in the future or at minimum very competitive games to say the least :). Two fiery coaches no doubt

What happened? Both good coaches. Both overachieved this year.

Im not so sure PG has overachieved ...and wouldnt be so sure to put her in the category of GOOD coaches just yet ...she is learning I hope ...subbed for her starters with 4 min left and I believe she expected Mr Newlove to throw in the towel ..PG up twenty ...then subbed the starters back in at 2 min and had them press ..still up 20...no disrespect to Atown but in previous yrs have seen them press while being up a bunch ...but that's why they have a state championship trophy IMO

I would say that oldlefty's synopsis is pretty accurate. She apparently didn't realize we press most of every game when down, but the real factor was we already had subs in the game, not all starters. I think that when she subbed her 2nd string, she fully expected to not get pressed which didn't happen. The reality is she subbed her starters back in immediately and began to press our 2nd team and scoring. What oldlefty may have not seen was the clapping directed at Coach Newlove everytime they stole it and scored. I think that is where things went bad.

Regardless...this will make for some interesting games in future both ways. The other interesting piece of this is that she wasn't even around to know if we "over pressed' in the past or not. Our games with PG were always decent - with neither team having huge spread so not sure why she would want to "pay back".

PG already had all 2nd string in with 4 minutes to go. Arlington scores and calls time-out with under 3 minutes left. Arlington subs another starter in and a sub for a different sub. All players in for Arlington are now in for speed to force turnovers with a press. PG sees this calls timeout and puts all starters back in and then presses at their first chance. Under 2 minutes left all subs back in for PG. PG preserves the 20+ point lead with a 20+ point win. I see nothing wrong or unethical with how this went down. :shrug2:

PG coach 1-0 against Arlington. :bow2:  :pickles: :punk:

You know we talk all the time about sportsmanship in the games. Yes, there's nothing agregious here, but c'mon adults. What if one of your key players rolls and ankle in the last minute of a 20 point game because you're trying to prove a point??? It seems like one coach is always in the middle of these stories??
Then again, on Sunday at the IU/ Ohio State game, Watford gets smacked in the face with 12 seconds left, Buckeye's down 10. Guess it happens to the big boys too.

Have seen Newlove do this before! In his defense he was hoping to gain a share of the BVC title pending the outcome in Arcadia that night. Sure teams have come back from 20 point deficits with 4 minutes left, however odds are not in the trailing team's favor. See both coaches view on this one. Would lean toward showing good sportmanship.

I have witnessed Arlington pressing and up by 30-35 points.....against a team that had no chance at coming back. Hard to feel sorry for a coach that does that.....when his team is on the other end of a beat down.... :shrug2:

The future looks pretty good for Arlington girls basketball. Arlington's 8th grade class was pretty good this year. I believe they played for the BVC championship. Arlington's coaching staff and parents appear to be doing a good job of building their girls' program down in the Jr High and elementary school. I doubt Arlington will be on the receiving end of to many 20+ point beat downs in the next few years.

Pressing up 35 pts? I have been to 98% of our girls games over past 3 years and can tell you this hasn't happened. It's amazing what people think they remember...

I think this topic can die anytime. Arlington had 3-4 yrs of incredibly talented teams that could literally walk on the floor with no coaching in win games by 30 pts every night. When this happens, there will always be nelly wellies that complain about running up the score, etc. The reality is that in girls basketball - when there is such a discrepancy in talent, games get lopsided real quick. If you look at it from the Atowns perspective (in this case), how do you not continue to play hard and work to get better? SHould you pull starters in 2nd quarter? I love the saying I read some time ago about people that complain about running up scores...it's your job to not let it happen....

In the case of this year, we are obviously way down from where we were but still won 15 games this year. There were times that teams acted like they won the super bowl when they beat us (see Kenton for example)...it goes with the territory. One year your on top and the next you may not be....in the end coaches need to act responsibly in late 3rd and 4th quarters but also it's their job to make sure they are improving and you cannot do that when your starters play 50% of games.
