The Vanlue football team was forced to vacate their win against Hardin Northern this past season and placed on 2 years probation along with a $1,500 fine for using an ineligible player. Glad to finally see the OHSAA cracking down on programs (sarcasm).

They only have about 15 players, how hard is it to make sure everyone is eligible?

you know participation is bad when you have 15 players and one of them you have to cheat your way onto your team....haha

This is unbelievable. How in the heck with a 15 or so team roster do you not know if somebody is ineligible? This school ought to shut the football program down. Either that or this town and or school is a glutton for punishment.

Mistakes will be made, but yes, you'd think the small roster would be easier to manage in all aspects. The $1500 fine might be a bit over the top.

$1500? Now they will only be able to mow their football field twice, instead of four times. And probably will only paint the lines once too. Hopefully they can get them straight .... :coffee:

Good article in the Findlay paper this morning. Appears to me the fine was levied by the state only because OSHAA had made their review and instructed Vanlue the kid was not eligible. Vanlue went ahead and let him play. How difficult is it to manage a 15 player roster after the State tells you twice the kid cannot play.

The Vanlue woes now lead me to my next thoughts... Will Hardin Northern try to field a team in 2013. Reports are only 20 kids signed up for football again.

If Vanlue ignored the OHSAA then my view changes....shame on them

And it gets better, the word coming out of Dola is not only will they field a team they will/want to play an independent schedule,My Gosh, thats taking a bad situation and making it worse. Lets travel all over the state to play a game.

Had to laugh at the article a bit...."the player won't be indentified, but he was a transfer from Carey" On a roster of 17, I bet that one isn't hard to figure out.

In response to above about HN....really, an indy schedule? just going to disregard that BVC membership or what?? I am sure Tiffin Calvert would be happy to assume that spot. It's been like pulling teeth trying to find a league for them.

Vanlue knew he was ineligible, was told he was ineligible, but figured no one would notice. They just played the odds that they would most likely only have to give up 1 win if they got caught.

But I bet they didnt figure on the $1500 fine

As for HN..... I was told by someone over there that they wanted to ask the BVC if they could play a split varsity / Jv schedule. Play varstiy against the "bottom half" of the league and Jv agansit the "top half"...

Who determines who is top and bottom? "Hey Van Burean .. we think you will finsh in the bottom half of the league,we want to play your varsity." " And Arlington we want to only play your Jv's.... so you'll have to find someone else to play that friday."

Just want I was told.

Well that idea should go over like an itchy STD with the BVC

The OHSAA had to levy the fine vs. Vanlue because you have to do it. You can't let a program slide because they are terrible and probably don't have the money. You have to send a message.
I think it's a great idea for HN to try to "play down" for a year or two. If kids feel they actually have a chance to win some games, you may have a few more go out for the team.
But the decision needs to be made NOW, not 4-5 months from now. Make the decision now so the other teams in the league can find other opponents for that week they play the Polar Bears.
