For years, my family members have told me about ghost encounters. They were pretty believable and they had very vivid descriptions-so I pretty much believed. Until a couple years ago though-I had never had an encounter myself. I have had a couple now…the first was kind of serene and almost comforting...the last ones have me really freaked out!!

The first-my father-in-law died a couple years ago. My wifes dad was a good man-WWII vet, farmer that worked hard to support his big family. (They had 12 kids) His kids all oved him and he loved his kids. A day after his funeral-I went in our bedroom and sat in the recliner and was reading a book and fell asleep. My wife came to bed and didn't wake me up. It was probably close to 1 am, I woke up. Standing next to the bed by my wife was her dad. Clear as could be. Looked just like him. Looked like he was reassuring her that things would be ok. Kind of eerie-but not really scary at all.

This one has me freaked out. My wife went to bed-I stayed up later watching a baseball game. When I went to bed-she had the heat turned up and it was way too hot for me to comfortable. So I went into the spare bedroom and slept in there. I got up to visit the bathroom-and somebody was standing right in front of me. Scared the crap out of me and I fell back on the bed-rubbing my eyes and trying to get focused to see who it was. Seemed like it was a female. No idea who it could have been…….havent been in the room since. LOL

Anybody else have any stories or am I totally insane?

I was at the apartment that my wife and I first lived in. Fairly new place, so no reason to be on edge. I was feeding my daughter (now 8) in her high chair. She must have been right around 1 year old. My wife was at work. Her high chair was in the corner of the room and the living room was directly behind me, where she was facing. I see something out of the corner of my eye walk across the living room. It startled me and as I turned to look, nothing was there. I sat for a few seconds staring in the living room trying to figure out what I saw. Naturally, I blew it off like I was losing my mind. Turn back to feed my daughter and see her waving at "nothing" in the living room.

I would think if there were ghosts, then Elvis would surely be walking around the Jungle Room in Graceland. He died on the toilet with his jammies around his ankles for cryin' out loud. Talk about your prime haunting conditions.

We just moved into a 150 year old house in Sherwood. Thought nothing of it(figured it was probably haunted in some way being that old, no big deal). Personally the only thing I've heard is knocking on the walls(and a feeling one night like there was someone standing right over me for a few minutes.) We've also smelled cigar smoke....and nobody in the house smokes. My mom swears there's a small dog in her room all the time....even though our shih tzu sleeps in the living room on the couch.

So they're definitely here in this house. Still doesn't bother me. I figure if after living here 2 months, they aren't causing any major problems, then they're fine with us being here. I have no problem sharing a house, as long as things don't out of hand.

Just last week around 4pm i was at the bottom of our basement stairs. Nobody else home. I hear the door to our garage open then close.....slowly not like if wind had done it plus there wasnt wind. I said "who's here?"....people always just walk in. I was upstairs in 10-15 seconds. Nobody had come in....and there was no one outside.....no way anyone could have done that to the door and been gone wither inside or out by the time I got up there

I was in college, had a group of friends visiting and the door bell rang. No one was there. One of the guys thought a neighbor was playing a joke on us. A few minutes later the door bell ranged again. Again. no one was there. So one of the guys went out the back door and went around to the side of the house and hid in the bush. A few minutes passed and again the door bell ranged. Guy in the bush comes back in and verify no one was there. Guys are thinking problem with the door bell so they disconnect it. We all go into the kitchen and.....the door bell rings!!! The guys go running outside the house. Everyone is out and guess what we hear.....the piano is playing by its self!!!! Another night my roomie got home late and when she got home went to the bathroom before entering her bedroom. She had to pass another roommates door to get there. As she came out of the bathroom, roomie in bedroom asked who was with her. She said 'no one, I am by myself." Other roommate said "No I seen someone behind you as you entered that bathroom". An older lady's husband died in that house. We never felt spooked and we honestly believe he is what protected us the night someone tried to break into our home while we were not there. someone broke the back window and opened the door but didn't go any further. Police were called and they verifed, something or someone scared the person away.

When I lived at home I lived up stairs and the floors were hardwood so I could here people coming down the hall way. I would wake up and my door would be open all the time. I told my mom to quit and she wasnt doing it. One night I got up to use the bathroom, and was laying in bed trying to go back to sleep and I heard steps, my door opened, nobody there. Kinda freaked me out. The next night samething happened. One night my sister was little and had never seen my grampa, not even in a picture, was sitting on the end of moms bed, mom asked her what she was doing, she said grampa stopped to see me and tell me he loved me.

I was staying in a friends apartment one time, he always said it was haunted. I was on the couch and heard something in the kitchen, I turned around and said what are you eating, nobody was there but the cupboard door was open and a plate dropped to the counter...that was creepy for me, cause I had never been there before.

I totally believe in ghost.

I had an encounter not too long ago. I was sleeping in my bed when something startled me awake, like someone was in the room with me. Seeing no one, I went back to sleep. A while later, it happened again, only this time it felt as if someone was sitting at the foot of my bed. I woke up to a voice saying "It's OK. I just wanted to check in on my grandson". My grandma's voice. She was in the room with me that night...I just know it.

That reminded me of a funny one that happened to me. This was about 5 years ago at our current house. I was sleeping soundly when I felt this strong presence next to my bed. I opened my eyes and could see something there. When my vision cleared, I saw a very white figure staring me in the eyes. Startled, I gasped and retreated in bed a bit, waking up my wife. That's when I realized it was my then-three-year-old daughter.

I have a feeling this has happened to a lot of parents over the years.

I forgot to add in my story(and we realized it again tonight), but the guy here at our house seems fascinated by anything we have that's electronic. Usually we can smell his cigar smoke over our shoulder as we're playing games on the computer. One night after everyone had gone to bed, I could smell it in my bed room as I was playing around with my phone/had the PS3 on. So this guy likely lived here in the early years of the house and never knew what any of these types of things were. Again, he doesn't hurt us....just seems to come out and see what we're doing.

Also, we talked to the landlord and they said they had a small dog that was hit by a car a few years ago(they lived here before finding a bigger house). That would likely explain why it feels like there's a dog sleeping in the bed even when ours is in the living room.

never really experienced anything as far as seeing people. mine was at my buddies house, we were playing the ouija board, and afterwards went upstairs to play nintendo. all of sudden lights go out. now these were the old push button one way for on and another for off, older people will remember these old switches. we turned back on and about 5 minutes later same thing. that morning we woke up and was going to play with board again only to discover the board had been turned over in the box. all of us swear to this day that we did not turn the board over.

What is it with you rural people believing in fairy tales? :shrug2:

To answer the question...no ghosts are not real...it's not a matter of belief...it's a fact of the matter.

You like facts. I'd like to see your proof. Where are these "facts" you speak of. I'll wait.

What are your facts that a pink unicorn didn't just fly through my backyard and shoot down a UFO with it's starburst power? I'll wait for your proof.

The onus of proof is on the ones that make the claims of existence. Show me LEGITIMATE proof of a ghost hurting, killing, or even showing itself somewhere and I'll believe you instantly. Have fun in imaginationland.

Why do I have to show proof? I never claimed anything was fact. Didn't you claim it was fact that they didn't exist? I think I'm reading that correctly. Anyone else see that?

Sorry, I just think if someone would claim that something is a fact that they would have some proof that it is. Is that really too much to ask?

Also, where did I claim ghosts are real? I would never claim that as I really don't know. And neither does anyone else. Including you.

If you live by this logic(or lack there of), nothing is a fact, nothing can be proven, and nothing can not exist. Think about that for a while.

A valid argument is only possible by the ideology that you have valid premises. If your premise is totally unfalsifiable...meaning there is absolutely no way possible to prove that it is false, then you can not even construct an argument since your premise is flawed to begin with.

Example being a bird flying. If somebody tells you a bird flies, you can use logic and reasoning from a large sample construct(AKA common sense) to know that you 1: Are looking at a bird and 2: Are witnessing it's flight, therefore the bird can fly is a valid argument with 2 valid premises as you know what flight and a bird are.

Now if you said the bird transformed in to a beaver because YOU saw it and nobody else did, so it must be true, then you have a 100% unfalsifiable premise as there is no evidence to support your theory(which it isn't even a theory at that point). Nobody can show you evidence that a bird can not transform in to a beaver as there is no evidence to support it, therefore it's unfalsifiable and an invalid and flawed "argument" from the beginning. So the question remains...do you have a valid premise to support the argument that ghosts exist?....or are you just watching too many halloween movies?

I'm not arguing whether or not ghosts exist. I'm arguing that you claimed it as fact, when it is not a fact.

I do get your point that there is no proof that ghosts exist. And how for someone to lay a staunch claim that they absolutely do exist would need to show proof. But no one has done that. At least not on here.
