Thanks for adding the summary, paynepanthers; I was in too much of a hurry to post much beyond the score.

Did you see the WOSN cameras there? I did not (although I was not watching for them too carefully). I'd be really disappointed if they failed to send a camera to a game between two 7-0 teams. (I'm still a bit miffed that they did not bother to catch any highlights from the LCC/Bluffton game on Thursday.)

No I didn't but I must say I wasn't really looking for them. Had the one official had his way WOSN might have been the only way for anybody to see the game. He threatened both of sets of fans that he would clear the entire stands. I thought Bluffton held there own in the first half but Bath really upped the pressure in the second half and began to wear down Bluffton's defense. Bluffton's keeper made some quality saves. Good way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Yeah, that official did not appreciate the critique from the stands ...

I think it was a game where both teams felt lucky to end in a tie --- although it certainly hurt as much as a loss for Bluffton to give up that late goal. Both keepers had some good stops, and both teams missed on some quality chances.

By the way, the New Knoxville/Kenton score was apparently 3-0, not 2-0 (as OSSCA says), according to this tweet at WOSN:

I'm not from Kenton (so no bias for/against... really), but so long as Mauk is coaching football and soccer is part of the WBL, their record will not be of high quality. Kenton is a football town, plain and simple.
Football is the most popular sport in America and with old-fashioned, midwestern parents, a kid will play football rather than soccer (whether they like it or not, for some). Once Mauk leaves, wait 3 years and then see how many kids (if any, of course) have switched. Unfortunately for Wildcat soccer, they're in a tough spot as Mauk has had historic success.
Not making excuses as some schools can be good at both, just being realistic that not many schools can support strong football and soccer programs at the same time.
Maybe the NFL concussion scare will have some moms send their babies to soccer camp rather than midget league =)

Give Kenton a couple more years. I know there is a group of kids about 12 years old that are really good. If the coach can keep them away from that football he should have a lot of talent. I know that group of kids have beat up on ours several times.

I'm going to disagree here, but there is plenty of talent and numbers in the younger age groups. They need to have a reason to stay with it, and it just isn't happening. To blame football alone for the past soccer records is a cop out. How have Elida, Shawnee, Liberty Benton, and Ottawa Glandorf made it work?

I'm never said a school can't do well in both, but it's more of an exception rather than the rule. Especially in smaller schools (small DII and lower), it's difficult to have both solid football and soccer programs concurrently. Look at many historically good soccer programs that are now down, the football is up. And visa versa. It's not all coincidence.
As far as the 4 programs you listed, all are well-off financially (to my knowledge anyways) and soccer has become a (and I REALLY hate saying this, but) "rich-kids" game with club travel costs and such. Not saying that's the entire reason they're good by any means, but numerous players from those programs play year-round. If a player can compete against good competition and afford better coaches for longer periods of time, there is no reason they shouldn't be better than non-club players.
I have seen the U10/12 Kenton team that is good right now. If they stick together, they can be very good in HS. No disagreement there. My overall argument (with Kenton as the prime example at hand) is that it's tough for the majority to be good at both soccer and football.

Hagen, spot-on about the 'rich kid's" game. Always has been & always will be in America. We are the only country in the world where it's an upper middle class sport. Everywhere else, it's the sport of the working & underprivileged classes. To get truly good in America, you must play club ball year-round to play with & against the best (and to acquire the proper amount of technical repititions to master the skills required to play). As a former travel player, I shudder to think how my parents managed to fund both me & my brother playing for Pacesetter (team fees alone, not counting travel & hotel expenses).

This is also a major reason why we'll likely never be a major world force. Our players don't know the daily struggle to survive (thankfully) or the sacrifice required to get out of "undesirable" situations. The game for us is a pastime, for millions elsewhere, it's a way out of horrible poverty...or at least a temporary escape from the daily misery. Also, since we thrive on a "pay-to-play" club existence, parents expect Johnny to play...or we'll move him to another club where he will instead of creating a will to outwork those in front of you. This means we create players, but not competitors & there is a difference. A player knows all the moves & can look like CR in practice, but when times get tough a player hides because it's too hard, while a competitor pulls up his socks & goes in for the scrap. Our competitors, the kids from tough backgrounds, don't play soccer.

Man...off topic I guess. Mea Culpa everyone.
