These sound like fairly current happenings to me. You may not know these things because quite possibly your only source of info could be coming from The Courier. All you'll see there (academically) about Riverdale is the occasional Honor Roll. If we were L-B, maybe we'd make sure to plaster every accomplishment in the paper, or they'd just automatically do it for us, since the BVC schools are the darlings of the area to the Courier anyways.
The not too distant past saw our girls' BB team put together a very nice winning streak in our conference against some very good teams (twice per season) during that stretch...not to mention the appearances at state and multiple regionals. Also pretty strong soccer programs. You can also take cheerleading (whether or not you consider it a sport)...our competition cheerleading is some of the best around, having going undefeated at least one of the past two seasons. Had Mindy Justice not died tragically a couple years ago, she was OSU-bound for cheerleading.
I'm not saying we're world-beaters (why did you bring Riverdale into this anyways??)...and I don't know what school system you represent either...but I'm not sure what anything Riverdale or any other school has ever done academically or athletically has to do with my opinion about why kids these days (who just happen to be great athletes) make decisions to jump ship when things don't go the way they feel it should.
I'd say a VERY high percent of cases involve a decision based on athletics, not academics.

All of this talk started as a result of his basketball coach not having his contract renewed....IT'S SPORTS. Here's where I will start to sound old: There was once a day where kids and parents didn't give transferring or moving a second thought...but we are a much more spoiled society than we once were. We expect success much more than we used to. We see coaches come and go more than ever at ALL levels. If you can't win, you don't stay long. The biggest problem with that mentality is that for one team to win, another has to lose...EVERYBODY CAN'T WIN. We need to get over the idea that we all must be winners. We will do whatever it takes to win in our society, whether that is putting little Johnny on a travel team at age 4, paying multi-million dollar contracts for a college coach, or even walking away from our current surroundings (usually a team without the desired success) to go to a place where success is more of a guarantee. To me, the taste of this type of "success" is not nearly as sweet as doing it the "old-fashioned" way.
This whole thread took the direction of talking about WHERE this young man would be taking his talents instead of WHO will be the next coach at Vanlue. What would be wrong with Garber finishing high school at Vanlue? It's been kind of funny how many people are salivating over the thought of this kid coming to their school to HELP them gain more success. As much as I'd welcome him over to Riverdale to play with our team, you don't see me on here stating he SHOULD. That also goes to all the other area schools who obviously (according to whatdoiknow) have much better academics and athletics than Riverdale would ever hope for.

Falcon, Why is LB always mentioned in your posts? You even said why is Riverdale brought into this discussions and you do the exact same thing commenting about how LB controls the Courier. Gimme a break!

Again, I'll reiterate...what does any of this really have to do with THIS TOPIC???....I don't know...but I thought I might try to help whatdoiknow out with some info he/she might not be aware of...something that might change a bit of his perception of our lowly district. I wonder what the percentage of high school students in this country (not county) get to go to Harvard? I have a feeling that if we so chose to boast of this accomplishment, we very well could have....BUT, we didn't. It doesn't change anything either way about the quality of our school system, but it may have helped the perception that the public has of us, I guess.
Also, I did NOT cut L-B down as far as their abilities or accomplishments...such as whatdoiknow did concerning Riverdale. I did not bring my own school district into this conversation, but I'm not going to take a cut-down such as that without defending it. My point with using L-B (again, I could have used most BVC/Hancock Co. schools) is that people usually find their information from what is publicized. Our school does not get much publicity from the Courier (more sports than anything, but not much else). Most participants on this thread are probably from the area being served by The Courier, and thus my response regarding that. There are too many pre-conceived notions that help build not-so-true "reputations" about schools...and I think most of us (myself included) make the mistake of believing them.

I think there is a bit of a defense mechanism in us that usually "perks our ears up" when someone mentions our school in these threads. I notice that when L-B comes up in conversations, you seem to show up with a rebuttal...much like I do when Riverdale is mentioned. I think we find that to be true with many of us in here.
I really meant nothing specifically pointed toward L-B, just using them as an example for the BVC/Hancock Co. schools.
