Don't forget about his assistant. Ty added his dad, Kevin, to the coaching staff.............a great coach in his own right at Miller City for close to 20 years. He has a lot of input and rightfully so.
Great coach?? I would say good but not great. I can name 10 from his era I would take over him off the top of my head.

I unequivocally believe that Big Mac was and still is a great coach. He is #7 all time in Putnam County coaches in wins with a 274-154 (64% winning %age) in his 19 years at Miller City. He had some great talent and some mediocre talent during those years but the wildcats were always prepared and tough out. I also believe small school basketball was stronger back then due to the 3 divisions. Two of the best teams MC had lost in 1991 and 1993 to powerhouse teams (St. Henry in '91 and LCC in '93).

Look at what Miller City has been in the past 16 years since he left, average.

Pretty good stats not great. I do appreciate you showing them and having a discussion about them. No state title leaves me at good. Some believe Fro at VW and Adams at Elida are great with their what 3 district titles--I call that average. 91/93 had 4 divisions. Who did they lose to in 92 which might of been the best of that 3 year run. I would say he had alot of talent during his run at MC. During that 3 year run he had a Div 2 and Div 3 college player on his roster.

You say good, I say great.........your points are valid, let's settle at very good. The '92 MC team lost in the tournament to a Kalida team who went 21-3. Kalida eventually lost to Crestview by 2 in the next game. NW Ohio was dripping with very good to great teams teams that season at the small school level............LCC, MC, Kalida, Crestview, Wayne Trace, St. Henry, OG and Patrick Henry.........I may have even missed a couple.

The talent Sweet had in late 90's early 00's is no where even close to the talent now..

Wow, are you serious? Don't get me wrong....I love the way this year's OG team came together and made a great run to get to the State tourney....but I don't think they are even in the discussion of the Top 10-15 teams in OG history....regardless of what happens next weekend.

Homier, Guilbeaut, great & Leslie good
I don't feel Evans is worthy of "great"

Leslie went to the state title game with two different schools and winning one of them with OG. He also has the highest winning of any coach at OG with arguably the toughest schedules so I think he belonds in the great discussion.

Just doing it off the top of my head. I would give Homier and Leslie great if they stayed longer. Evans got a title and runner up at lincolnview. i can see the argument of moving him down because overall. Than Lincolnview is easily in my top 10 for best ever small school in NWO. 90/91 St Henry tops it but that Lancer team was unbelievable.

Leslie is a great coach.....you might also mention Brett Norris in that group when he was at DSJ.........I can remember when the Titan faithful wanted to run Leslie out of town for his coaching skills.....to funny!!!!!

Oh, by the way...both of those guys have a state championship ring!!!!

so was the Liberty Benton team with Granger and company.....which I felt was better than L'view......another great team who played great team ball was New Knoxville the year they won state......oh, and by the way, that reminds me.......Hegemeier who is now at St Marys should also fall in the class of great coach....2 state titles at different schools.....pretty tough feat!!!!

I would have loved to see that. LB was pretty damn good, only thing is I can only name 2 of their guys, Granger and Butler.....
LB had the best player, Granger, but L'View had the 4 next best.

I wont argue with his success. But there is a reason he has coached at 3 different schools and it's not a good reason.

Ty Mac gonna be at OG for a long time.

Sounds like Ryan Stechschulte is well liked in Columbus Grove. He had a great year this year but loses his starting 5 to graduation. Coach Steck is well liked in the Grove community and has some promising talent coming up.

No state title leaves me at good.

I've got no qualms with your list C-town. But there are many great coaches who will never sniff Columbus. Unless you have the Jimmy and Joe's...there is nothing a coach can do. I don't judge coaches by state title's, or even victories. I judge coach's on what they do with the talent they have. I judge them on how their teams improve as a season progresses. There are so many factors that go into it. Call it what you want...but by my measuring stick Kevin was a damn fine basketball coach.

If state title's are the measuring stick. I surmise that whoever the coaches at Dunbar, LCC, Ottawa, etc are 10 years from now...are already great! Or ANY coach willing to collect transfers/convicts/etc are great (Dunbar fits both lists)! There is just too much that goes into state titles to use that as a measuring stick, in my opinion.

I'll use Sensabaugh (sp?) or Best. Both are great coaches that get the most out of the talent they have. I'll even throw Rob Welch into the mix. Lincolnview's talent has not been anywhere near conference championship level...let alone Columbus. But his teams are always prepared. They play a lot of close games. Ada learned that the hard way. This guy has a losing record as a coach. But that does not mean he is not a great coach...in my book!

I'm not saying these guys deserve to make a top ten list. I'm just saying that a top ten list takes into account a lot of factors that are outside of variables a coach can control.
I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
