Maybe those 5 kids did not have the mental toughness to compete.........it's not always the coach's fault!!!!!!!

After reading the Lima News recently, I saw some coaches are winning their 300th, 400th and 500th games respectively. I was wondering if there were any young coaches in the area, whether currently coaching a Varsity, JV, and/or Freshmen team that has some of the qualities to be a great coach and possibly be the next Bob Arnzen (DSJ), Dick Kortokrax (Kalida), Joe Petrocelli (Kettering Alter) or Steve Williman (L-B )?

I believe Kirk Lehman is getting close to 300. Everytime they say his overall record on the radio I seem to miss the exact total, but I'm wanting to say it's over 280.

He's not a "young coach" anymore.

No, but I read the original post to mean who's got a shot at 300, 400, 500 wins. He's getting awful close to 300......

Plus he's only in his low to mid 50s. He's not "young" by any means, but he's far from "old." He's got some good years left assuming the talent level in the program stays good.

He had 5 kids quit on him.. Not to good is it?? We will see

I think this is very good for the program. Program building 101...chase the malcontents, or let them prove their own character, and work with those who really want to be there. The worse thing a new coach can do is coddle the old guard. That typically leads to a slow bleed. Best to use the Bandaid theory and get working on the program as soon as possible. Ottoville might have got 3 more wins this year with the players that quit. Of course everyone would have been miserable and they would not be nearly as far along with the expectations and work ethic required to move the program forward.

Turnwald has proven he knows how to win. He will have the program, expectations, system, etc in place to take advantage of the next talent run when/if that comes.

Those boys that quit will one day regret it. You can never get that opportunity back.

P.S. I agree with Best at Crestview. Everything is in place for him to succeed a long time.
I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

Ty Mac

Really Ty Mac already. I know the school system and some others from OG have anointed him the chosen one there as soon and even before he left college. But his resume is still not that great. Not many years coaching and not really anything impressive. I'm not saying he won't be a great coach but it's crazy the way he is hyped into this great coach. Just because he has a big name doesn't make him this great coach

Yes Ty Mac already... really.. not an impressive resume consists of 2nd year as head coach district champion 3rd year (first at OG) regional champion heading to Columbus.. Find me any area coach his age that did this in first 3 years

Not sure OG is all that stable of a job. I mean granted it has been a very long time since any coach has been let go in ottawa but that's because they have had so many great coaches and teams in their existence. I could see where if Ty doesn't produce like the last three coaches OG have had he will be let go relatively soon in his tenure.

I'm not saying he is a bad coach. Just think that OG had him in mind for the job from the start when he got out of college and didn't really give anyone else thought. Tyson is doing a fine job there and I'm not trying to make him sound like a bad coach. He will go on and win many games there, but so did the last few coaches.

Voice, getting to state with this year's team is ALOT different than getting to state with some of the teams in the past. Nothing against the kids....but 5 games into the year, I wasn't sure we'd get 10 wins.....and I think the kids were starting to feel that way too. It took one heck of a coaching job to turn this team around and get them to Columbus. I like Coach Sweet and Coach Leslie, but I think we'd have been sitting home watching next week instead of playing if Ty Mac's not on the bench

I think with Sweet you could be playing at state. You gotta remember Sweet coached when NWO had some great teams and they meet alot of teams on the road to Columbus.

I agree Tyson did a good job. Also not to take anything away from the kids because this is a great season and they deserve all the credit this year as well but if coach Sweet would have been playing in D3 I think there would be a few more banners hanging from the OG gym. I'm not taking anything away from Tyson he did a good job this year with the team. Also the last time OG won at State you could say the same thing with Leslie. No one had that team picked for state.

Don't forget about his assistant. Ty added his dad, Kevin, to the coaching staff.............a great coach in his own right at Miller City for close to 20 years. He has a lot of input and rightfully so.

The talent Sweet had in late 90's early 00's is no where even close to the talent now..

Don't even start that. The talent and teams of 10+ years ago here and all over NW Ohio were much much better than the teams today.
I love and am rooting for OG to win it all but let's be realistic......

Best thing that happened to OG there for a while was going to D2. D3 was nasty from the late 80's up until early 2000's.

Lol you're saying 3 was better than 2???LeBron walked to D3 title as a freshman and struggled to win D2 actually lost in state title game in 02 and barely won in 03

every once a while div 4 is better then 3, div 3 is better then 2 and so on. But as you go up in Division the road to columbus gets harder. Playing in Div 3 is an advantage for OG. Who do you want to play in regionals New London or Elida?? Y
