I'm under the impression that Calvert, H-L and NB have all responded positively to the BVC letter of interest.

The Courier gives BVC schools better coverage than outside leagues.
Even if they only played "most of the BVC", they would still get decent exposure to non-conference competition in sports other than football (with the BVC, as compared to the N10). It is my understanding that the N10 is planning on playing a home-and-home schedule for most sports. In a 10-team league, that's 18 conference games! It might make the AD's job a lot easier to do it that way, but I don't think it's a good idea to keep your teams so isolated. Outside exposure gives the conference an idea of how good they really are. Who wants to go 20-0 in a weak league and lose their first of second tournament game? If you always have tough non-league competition every year, it won't matter if your conference is having a down year.
Don't get me wrong. I think the N10 will be a good league for both Carey and Riverdale...but the "home-and-home" thing is probably the worst aspect of it (from a competitive point of view). Travel isn't the greatest, but for Riverdale, it is still better than the current NCC.
Riverdale's district actually borders Findlay, but as long as Riverdale is in the NCC or the N10, they are considered "outsiders" because the BVC is basically King in these parts when it comes to placement or substance in the sports pages. At least Carey has their own weekly newspaper...they could write as much as they want about themselves.

Sure the coverage isn't a reason to choose a league, but it would be a bonus for either Carey or Riverdale. The articles for BVC teams can be twice as big, plus on the front page of the Courier's sports page. When you have to search on page 3 or 4 to find a paragraph about the game, it hardly makes the subscription worth it. When the press votes on all-district teams, the couriers' voter(s) may not be as familiar with our kids since they don't cover as many of our games.
Maybe I shouldn't be so hard on the Courier, but I'm not exaggerating on the write-ups...ESPECIALLY in football...unless we are having a good season (about once every decade).
How's this for a reason to join, then?...
When Riverdale borders Hardin Northern, Arlington, and Vanlue (plus Carey if they joined), wouldn't THAT be a reason to join? Carey borders Vanlue, and is close to others. Travel would be a HUGE plus for us (and I would imagine Carey as well (when compared to the N10 for them). Not only does travel save money (and time for the kids on a school night), it almost guarantees better gates. In home games versus BVC schools, Riverdale almost always has a better visiting crowd than from our own conference. But that's not too surprising when the closest opponent (until Upper joined this year) is 35 miles away. Try talking a few more Lucas residents into driving 72 miles from their school to watch their team play...were talking maybe 15 fans for a basketball game...fewer yet for volleyball on a school night. Can't make much money from your sports that way. We'd see huge gains in ticket sales in the BVC...plus I really believe we'd bring a better than average crowd to those games (especially compared to a HN, Vanlue, Arcadia, C-R).

I think Riverdale joining BVC is a no brainer. I was just asking why Carey NOT joining BVC was a mistake?

Respectfully disagree. But you never know, that could happen. To me, that is MUCH more likely to happen if Riverdale doesn't come. No one expected Carey to switch. Or Mohawk. Or some of these other schools. If Riverdale doesn't come, it will be interesting to see which of the D5 schools would be a good fit besides Hopewell.
Also disagree on the "long shot" comment. Just from what I have heard. Doesn't mean that Calvert is a "lock" at all. No one is. But then, there isn't even an interview list yet, so everyone is putting the cart before the horse here anyway.
Not sure why cropduster is against a Calvert entry (maybe travel distance?) but I know you have said the "Catholic" thing might be an issue. Just letting you know that I haven't heard that anywhere from BVC people.
I totally expect 4 teams in, especially if Riverdale pulls the trigger.

I include Riverdale ALONG with Carey because we have been backyard rivals for YEARS. We used to be league rivals until they left for the MAL. We will reunite as league rivals in the N10...BUT if Riverdale would join the BVC, having Carey join us could bring them back as a league rival again. I think that sticking with Riverdale could be advantageous to Carey. Many of the same reasons that Riverdale should join the BVC apply to Carey also. That's why I mentioned Riverdale.

I'd think Calvert would have some support from Liberty-Benton, McComb and Van Buren. Each of those three have been consistent schedulers of Calvert over the last 10 years or so. I don't know about Leipsic, P-G and C-R. There isn't any history there and it's a fair distance travel wise.

As much as I love you man, there's no way Calvert gets a sniff of the BVC. Too fringe, too Catholic. There's a better chance of a meteor crashing through the school than getting into the BVC/
I don't think expansion will end up happening anyway.
Too many closer candidates like Hopewell-Loudon, RIverdale and North Baltimore. My personal picks for expansion would have been Riverdale, NB, Carey and Hopewell-Loudon. But for my own selfish reasons for my job.

In today's climate of state funding getting sent to private schools...I feel that there will be many Catholic and other Private Christian Academies getting left behind in the "League Settings" of today. I don't blame the leagues for keeping them out or not inviting them to be a part of their league.
What the NWC to did to LCC is just a start in my opinion of Private schools eventually having their own tournaments...etc.
