I agree with maxwellsmart. Steve Trout may not have the best personality in the world, but he is a very good official. The thing that happens with Trout is that he continually gets the big games, and he is worthy of them, but in every big game one team is going to lose. In a tight game the fans remember that one call that he made that was controversial, and could have been correct, but cost their team the game. The losers always have Steve Trout to blame because he always has the biggest target on his back. League assigners, the Northwest District Board, and the OHSAA must all be wrong if he is officiating the big games and doesn't deserve them.

Comedy Central is looking for new talent.....with stuff like this coming from your mouth, you'd be famous in no time.

giddyup,

I'm impressed with your ability to post while in the position you most often find yourself. How can you even see the keyboard? :bow2:

Actually, there are good and bad of everything in life. Players, coaches, fans, cheerleaders, waterboys, camera guys, moderators, etc etc. I think the issue is the attitude presented by humans in interactions with other humans. Those whose reps precede them can expect deeper scrutiny. Nice guys get more free passes. Just the way it is and I'm glad because I'm a very nice guy.

I've said this very same thing about Trout/Derryberry/Mangus/etc. on this site for YEARS. People REMEMBER the guys who get big games because they get (and keep getting) big games. It's a familiarity thing. In North Central Ohio, where I reside, it's always that GD Russ Pitts, or John Gurney, or Troy Newsome, or Mark Litton, or John Suppon (they've all had multiple State games). Folks see the faces, and then hear the names introduced, and then see them 2-3 times during the tourney, and they REMEMBER them. Now with the internet, they just have a way to "vent" and can facelessly attack them in a way that they could never do before, minus going to a game or the local barbershop.

The same type of attacks have been lobbed at others (and me) in forums such as these in other sports, including the one that I work. It's just the nature of the beast.....sadly. Folks like to bitch and moan and this (and other) forum gives them an outlet. It's easy to post something here, and have it spread about as Gospel.

Look no further than the 2 geniuses on here (one the thread starter, no less) that had Jerry Snodgrass as the "head of officials," (debunked) and Trout working all of LeBron's State games. For that moron....an official can only work a State game every 2 years, so unless LeBron spent 8 years in high school.....

All that said, Trout, while being a good official, can be an overbearing pain in the ass. IF he cursed, even with context, it's NOT very professional. Relax boys, his time is coming to a close, and then you'll all have to focus your barbs on someone else.....and you will

All this talk about overbearing refs brings to mind the guy who seems to be the complete opposite. I've never seen John Schuck (sp?) act unprofessionally, and he's a damned good referee also.

Knite.....

I wish I could agree with you, but the fact is that Trout, Derryberry, Mangus and one other I will not mention, do not ref all the games in Ohio....I seldom see them during the season.....as a matter of fact, I see officials like Gary Leatherman, Schimmoeller, Schroeder, Brown, and many others more than I see the first 3 I mentioned....I would also say that those latter mentioned officials all do a very commendable job, and I see them quite often......I guess, what I am trying to say is that no more than I see Mangus, Trout, and Derryberry......those 3 call more than enough bad games to make up for all the other officials combined....interesting note....I am in the Varsity Club in 2000 talking to a local coach who has his team in the final 4, when up comes one of the officials mentioned above......he calmly approaches the coach with a cold one in his hand and says...."I got your game tomorrow".....I lmao everytime I see the official blow another call.......the comment about he is noted as a bad official because you see him do alot of games is plain bull$hit.........he is noted as a bad official because he is a bad official.......the episode in the Varsity Club is as unprofessional as the profanity episode that took place at the game between a fan and a ref......

Officiating is a thankless job......requires alot of time, and you have to really love the game to do it......the officials that do it for the love of the game are special.......there are many who do it for the money and the ego boost who care less about calling a good game.....let em play, call few fouls, and get the game over as quickly as possible.......I know officials who think this way.....I have attended many games in the past and currently still do.....the best official is one who hustles his rear off and is in the right place at the right time.....and most of all, you don't realize he is even there....if I notice those points in a official, I will give him the benefit of the doubt on all calls because he is absolutely trying his hardest to do a commendable job.......for those who think the 3 bad officials that I mentioned do that then please reply in their defense.........those 3 draw more attention to themselves than anybody I know.......I might also add that those 3 might call a good game once in awhile, but over the years when I am sitting in the gym and any of those 3 show up to officiate, I just shudder.......and usually, they don't disappoint!!!!

Before you throw someone under the bus, you might want to actually know them. You might want to know what they do behind the scenes. Your opinions might be different - maybe not. I'll say this, if you're a young official and want to work, there are certain officials that will help you get games, if you're qualified. Those guys keep in touch with ADs - they help new guys in the profession.

I personally don't like a couple of the ones that have been listed because of their arrogance OFF the court. If I see an official in a public place, I expect him to treat me like anyone else. Why is being at the Varsity Club an issue? Officials can't have a beer? These officials can't have friends as coaches?

I'm as critical as anyone about officials IF they're out of position, have bad mechanics, and wishy-washy on the call. I'd argue that you have to have a little arrogance on the court or you'll get run over by the specators and coaches. Give me a guy who makes a strong call from the right place with good mechanics and I have no beef.

One of the 3 listed is WAY better than the other 2 - if you know him.

Do really expect anyone to believe that story? A coach, with his team playing in the State Championship, abandones his team and goes to the Varisty Club for a few beers? I would seriously doubt that happened, and if it did, I would say the coach is less professional than the official.

The great thing about this site, and the internet in general, is that people will read that drivel and believe it! You can simply make stuff up and there is no need to base any of it in truth. If you have issues with someone, that is fine, but making up stories to try to persuade other people to feel the way you do is simply wrong.

You know, I really could give a crap whether you believe me or not......it happened, and I have 3 very credible witnesses who saw it also....you may have to get out more or quit being so naive......actually, I have more incredible stories than that which are really hard to believe........ giddyup.....if you are going to call some one out, you better be very certain about what you are saying, otherwise you look like the bigger fool!!!!!!

As with most things, your goal is to climb the ladder of that career. Therefore your goal would be to go from high school officiating, to college, and eventually work in a major conference such as the Big Ten and etc. In order to get a game considered to be "big" at the high school level, it requires you to have experience under your belt because the assigner won't usually give the game to a newer official. The problem is, sometimes there's a reason the official has spent 30 years at the high school level and never worked his way up. Or in Trout's case you tried climbing the ladder and couldn't climb higher than the MAC for a couple years and then tumbled your way down.
