The student in question was treated exactly like any other student would have been treated.

When did the cheating incident take place? What is the school rule? What is the team rule regarding character, etc?

I honestly don't know. Don't follow Elida... Just wondering why and how there could be a delay (if there was one) in punishment for cheating. It seems cut and dry. You get caught cheating by the teacher...teacher tells principal/coach...etc. How long does this process take these days?

Is there some sort of cheating Miranda Rights and due process I'm unaware of...?

In my day...if I got caught cheating at 2:00 pm, by 2:30 pm my dad would have found out and I would have had welts on my ass. My coach, if he would have let me stay on the team at all, would have ran my welted ass until I puked.

So it is from this perspective and understanding that I'm finding it difficult to understand how and why a kid was allowed to play in a big game...if the said game occurred at any time AFTER the cheating incident. Did the player play in ANY game after he got caught cheating? If so, what is the rule/justification one uses to explain that delay?
I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

Well, I'd be hesitant to besmirch the entire name of Elida for the behavior of one student. Also, it's been scientifically proven that the frontal lobe, the area of the brain that is in charge of making decisions, isn't fully developed until around the age of 27. So yeah, it's pretty much guaranteed that teenagers will make bonehead moves. I don't blame the school or the teachers for giving the student a second chance after the first incident, but if the kid continues to make poor choices, as seems obvious, then they absolutely did the right thing by punishing him and suspending him for the standard three days. As for whether it is or isn't the responsibility of a school to instill character, I think it's the responsibility of every educator: from administrator to teacher's aide to be responsible and show character, but a lot of the lack of character that is shown is from poor parenting. It's hard for teachers to completely make up for the negligence shown by parents when teachers get them for a few hours each week, for 9 months out of the year.
Regardless, the kid made a mistake and the school actually did something about it, which is actually rather commendable. There are some things more important than athletics, and it's nice to see a school district actually give a crap about their students, more than winning basketball games. (This actually reminds me of the game Archbold played vs. Cincinnati North College Hill back in 2006. OJ Mayo was suspended for the state semi-final game for skipping school to get his haircut, and his mother and he made a huge deal about it, but the school told him, he was the one to break the rules and he didn't get to play, but they actually punished their star player for skipping school and didn't allow him to play in one of the biggest games of his high school career.)

I think it's great if he's thinking about turning over a new leaf......Just make sure there is nothing of value lying underneath it.

The classroom incident that resulted in the current suspension happened yesterday 2/27/2012. The three day suspension began today 2/28/2012. Day 1 2/28/2012. Day 2 2/29/2012. Day 3 3/1/2012. The previous classroom incident was a 1 day suspension. The coach chose to sit the player for a game even though the suspension was a one day suspension and did not involve a game day.

Flounder,
This kid has been helped by everyone he has come in contact with from my observations and conversations with people over the last 4-5 years. He has had many many breaks. I'm really saddened that he has not taken to people who really cared about him by following their guidance and instead eventually took advantage of them [administrators, teachers, family, friends, classmates, teammates ......] I really hope and pray this kid is doing great in 5 years because that is the true test of whether he has matured and if those who tried were successful or failed him.

The PROPHET is sad :crybaby:

Ok, here's the scoop. This student was accused of cheating on a test. The student denied it. An arguement ensued and the student asked to leave and go to the office. The teacher denied his request and told this student to wait outside until after class, then go to the office together. The student refused to wait and went to the office by himself. The rest is history. Thats how it went down.

Thanks for filling us in. Hopefully this can end all wrongful speculation by everyone. Also, hope this kid can get back out on the court and help lead Elida to a nice tournament run. It would be nice to have a few local teams down at Columbus this year.

Thank you for clearing up that information. This seems to indicate that by the minimum standards (i.e. "treated like everybody else")...protocol has been followed.

Will there be additional punishment from the team? I know a lot of teams/coaches have additional standards/rules/regulations. Is this the case at Elida? It would appear that there are some team repercussions since the coach went ahead and sat the kid when "it did not involve a game day." Precedence has been set that indicates the coach will enforce discipline that is above and beyond the "minimum standards." But I'm not aware of the Elida team rules? Are they written in stone? Or is the coach free-lancing?

On the surface, it would seem that if a one day school suspension led to a 1 game suspension...then we could/should expect that the three day school suspension would lead to a 3 game suspension...at the minimum. I could see it being more for a repeat offender. But I would understand if they kicked the kid off the team for good too.

Anyhow, thanks for clearing up some of the time line. It would appear, as of this moment, that the coach/school has done everything by the book. Time will tell if this conviction continues.

He probably figured he could sit him because they were playing Shawnee. Would he have done it against Defiance?
