Beasty, to comment on your above post...

The weights listed on the stat tracker of NWCAonline are the lowest certified weight that particular wrestler can reach per his individual weight program for the season. With my team as an example, you will see many kids listed at lower weights than they will be wrestling at this weekend because their weight loss plan does not allow them to be there yet. and some of the kids will never actually get to that lowest weight class. It is a great resource and absolutely valid information, but you have to understand that not everyone will actually be that low. I would wager to say that most kids will be one if not two weight classes above those weights this weekend if not for longer.

And us coaches aren't all keeping quiet to be sneaky... it's just that we know that this opening weekends roster will be quite a bit different than the rosters many of us will have for the WBL matches and tourney. OK, and some of us are still be a little sneaky.

Not sure how the super tri meets are supposed to work...there seem to be 4 teams but according to that Celina would be wrestling Bath 3 times for the league. Can someone explain?

There will be 4 teams at each super tri site but each team will only wrestle twice. The schedule has been pre determined by the league AD's.

Here is the line up for the first day of the tri's. There will be two sites hosting wrestling this thursday.

At Defiance
Bath vs. Celina
Defiance vs. Elida
Bath vs. Defiance
Celina vs. Elida

At Kenton
Kenton vs. OG
St. Mary's vs. Shawnee
Kenton vs. St. Mary's
OG vs. Shawnee

What was wrong with the league duals they've been doing the last couple years or so? This system seems like it's going to cause excess travel when two teams could wrestle at one venue but don't even though they are both there..

The way it was being done in the past was not fair to the wrestlers ... The wrestlers are students first.

This also brings more teams to each event (minus the huge duel) meaning more wrestling per event and more excitement per event!

This new system will be a win not only for the fan but also for the wrestlers. I believe it also opens up more points for the teams to wrestle in bigger or more events throughout the season but I am not completely sure if I am correct about that one.

Yes, the mid week dual event was a nightmare. Wrestling on a tuesday until 12:30 is not good for anyone. And the format was a disaster. Teams would be spread out on two mats and it was difficult to see who was winning a dual. The new format will be much better as it will be traditional duals (two teams on one mat) and easy for teams and fans to follow.

And to address the travel issue, we actually travel less this way. In the past we had the dual tourney and then 5 seperate dual meets. This was 6 events. Now we have 4 super tri's and one dual for a total of five events.

And the other point for the new format is we opened our schedule for another out of league event. In the past our WBL schedule cost us 9 points out of a 20 point schedule. We now only use 7 points of a 20 point schedule. this allows for an extra tournament to help better prepare our kids for the end of the season. To put this in perspective... most leagues only use 2-4 points for league events and the rest of the schedule is opened up to move around the state and find top notch out of conference competition.

All in all the change was something everyone involved in WBL wrestling welcomed with open arms.

Okay, thanks. That helps. Have to agree that it seems odd to be in Defiance and not wrestle Defiance, then have to meet them at another site, but, hey, whatever works. Can understand the points part and have to agree with that. Good luck to all the WBL wrestlers this year!

As a former WBL wrestler from the 80's, I have to give some thought to the new schedules. When I wrestled for Elida, I lived for our rivalry with Shawnee and Defiance. I didn't look forward to much more through the season other than facing both those teams. Our locker room would just shake with intensity. However, it did not prepare me for what I was going to face at sectionals or districts (back in my day regionals and districts). Now that I have a son in the WBL, I still push for him to wrestle particularly well versus other WBL teams. But to be able to go to so many tournaments and face such a wide variety of wrestling styles and a multitude of champions from around Ohio and other states is invaluable at the end of the season. If any of you are familiar with J. Jaggers, two time national champ from OSU, he always he said at a few of his camps that he used the regular season as a lesson to allow him to peak at the end of the season where wins and losses really mattered.
I have been on many forums and many posters have plenty of negative things to say about the WBL. I really believe this type of scheduling will not only benefit the individual but will bring respect to our area.
Congratulations to the Redskins. Very impressive in your wins on the mat but most impressive in the way your coach responded at the end of the match versus Olmstead Falls. I would love to see this carry over to the rest of the WBL!!!!!

Thanks for the explanation. To tell the truth, I kinda forgot already about some of the confusion at the duals before. It does seem this is a much better format, and the extra points are great too.

Thanks for the Congrats, but the I'm not sure the coach was responding to the correct thing actually. The last OF wrestler was a little cocky in his loss, but team win...BUT most importantly the fans were responding to the ref holding up the OF wrestlers arm as if he won the match, but actually the Wapak wrestler did. Yes though, Coach Ross wants the team and fans to be classy in both wins and losses!

I was on the opposite side of the gym from where the majority of the Wapak fans were seated. I stayed and listened to the Coach speak to the wrestlers by themselves. (I wasn't referring to when the match first ended) He talked about winning and losing with dignity and pride and not allowing bad calls, fan response, or anything else to get in the way of them being Wapak wrestlers. He reminded the team that they were to act like gentleman in times of adversity. It was just a overall good message to the team.

Wapak has a Tri with Allen East and Coldwater tonight and are going to the Firebird tournament in Kettering on Sat. Should be another good tournment. Erb is going for the school record for wins tonight too.

Anything happening with the other WBL teams? What are thoughts on the allen county tourny?

Just looking at some match scores from last night. Looks like Wapak had a tough one with Allen East. Allen East gave them two voids while Wapak gave one. Then Wapak won only 5 of the remaining 11 matches. Looks like Allen East is for real. Final 39-29. Wapak did much better vs Coldwater 40-22. Shawnee split their matches, they beat OG but lost to St. Marys. Elida, by score on the WBL site, seems to have done well winning both of their matches last night. Bath also put up two wins. Looks like it is going to be another nail biting year for WBL fans.

Wapak took care of AE and CW, but it wasn't pretty. They are still working on getting their lineup where it needs to be. It looks like they don't have a legitimate 112 or 140 so far this year. That could change some, but it's likely that it will cause them problems in duals. Wapak will probably be a much better tournament team this year than dual team. But, it's still early on so I guess we'll have to wait and see!

AE and CW line ups are yet to be set also it's just that time of the year. AE voided 3 weights. There was some decent wrestling at Wapak last night.

Sooo... What weight classes look to be a toss up this year in the WBL? Who are your projected winners for each weight class?

Wow...Everything is very quiet on the wrestling front!

Wapak seems to be the team to beat with so many wrestlers returning. That has been quite evident in thier first couple outings. A man told me yesterday when Wapak wrestles it was like watching a man chop wood...one after another falls!

The rest of the WBL seems to be settling into place behind Wapak this year.

But we still must wrestle the matches!

Super tri this Thurs. at Bath. Wapak will be wrestling Bath and Celina, not sure who the fourth team will be..The league will be a little closer to figured out after this. Wapak has some big guns, but there are holes in their lineup. Should be a good night of wrestling.
