saw this article awhile back around the world cup...

Only a few days away and the pinnacle of excitement for soccer fans all of the world will begin. Soccer fans also know what that means. The soccer haters come out and express how much soccer sucks.

Every four years the “soccer sucks” phrase awakens from its deep sleep in the brain of know-it-alls. You don’t hear it any other time. Only when World Cup fever starts to heat up. To those who say it, I’m surprised they took the time away from smashing beer cans on their forehead to speak.

Not everyone like every single sport out there. I don’t understand all of them. Not everyone likes hockey, golf or tennis. But when the NHL season, Masters, or US Open begins you don’t hear those haters come out and say “Golf sucks. It’s so boring.” It’s just soccer that they think sucks.

Why so? Because it’s not America’s game. Here kids grow up with football and baseballs in their cribs. Soccer is something they do when they’re five years old but eventually grow out of it. Ignorant people believe it’s not a true sport if you use only your feet and not your hands. Also if you use your feet why isn’t it called football? Those are the same geniuses who think lighting their fart on fire is funny.

They’re also whining about how slow the game is. They say, “There are lots of passing the ball around and games end with one or two goals. Boring!” No one ever said baseball was a fast sport. How about football? For all the excitement on the gridiron each play only lasts seconds then both teams take a break until another play runs again. In basketball what can be so exciting about a 2 point basket? I say to that, “Look he made another one. I just saw one of those 10 seconds ago. Wow, this time he shot a 3 point shot.” Finally the same people who hate the lack of action or scoring in soccer are the same ones who watch a stock car drive around a track for three hours. What can be more boring?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge fan of most of the sports I just mentioned (except for the last one). Those who say soccer sucks are saying they’d rather watch bottom dwellers San Francisco 49ers play the anemic Cleveland Browns to a 10-3 finish instead of a World Cup final between soccer powerhouses Brazil and England.

Those who hate soccer just don’t understand the game. If you don’t know a goal kick from a field goal you’re not going appreciate the skill, artistry, and strategy of soccer. Put someone in front of a television who doesn’t know why a running back runs into a huge pile of guys is going to find it boring as well.

If you don’t like soccer don’t watch it. When the highlights come on go to the fridge and find some leftovers. Don’t read about it in the newspaper. Go straight to the comics. Don't go and post on a soccer form. Go to the football form. Just don’t say it sucks because you don’t know it all.

Actually tell your mommy you figured out how to get on the computer so she can put nanny guard on it because it is obvious you are incapable of an intelligent post!

Just came across this tonight and got a kick out of what you guys are saying about soccer. According to cnn in July of 2006 there are an estimated 41 million kids are involved in competitive youth sports in the United States. In soccer, which remains one of the country's most popular youth sports, numbers have risen from about 15 million in 1987 to more than 17.5 million in 2002, the latest date for which numbers are available, according to U.S. Soccer. If I do the math right that means more than 1/3 of the kids playing sports is playing soccer.
Now every sport there is has its places that we can make fun of, Wrestling has its singlets. Baseball has its crotch scratching and spitting that everyone notices. Football plays only last an average of 8-10 seconds at a time. Then by the end of the game everyone is so tired. You could say something about Basketball, cheerleading, tennis, Golf, volleyball, bowling. You get my point. Yes soccer doesn't have a lot of scoring but you go out and try to take a ball out of the air from 40 yards with your foot with a defender right on you and see how you do.
What is something that you hear from every coach in every sport? Footwork, Footwork, Footwork. What is a better way to learn that as a kid than playing soccer. Not only do you have to dribble a ball at your feet, which I would like to see you guys do. But you also have defenders right there on you.
I like all sports. Have played basketball, football, baseball, soccer, and bowled in leagues. I will watch about any sport that is on TV. I think the reason most people HATE soccer is just because they don't understand it. I have talked to many parents that have kids that start playing soccer in Jr. High or high school. Almost 100 percent say they never thought that soccer would be this exciting, this physical, and this much fun to watch.
Everyone is allowed their own opinion and that is great. But my son who is 7 made my day at a superbowl party this year. Someone asked him if he is going to play football someday and he said No I am a soccer player. I guess when it comes down to it, its what makes our kids happy. If my kids plays soccer, I will be happy. If my kids play football, I will be happy, If my kids do wrestling, I will be happy. Sometimes parents get in the way.

well said stands..

I read The Sun from the UK... and saw an article about a 6 year old boy who is said to be the next Zidane.. So i decided to check him out on you tube

Ajerian the Next Zo Zo

Manchester United, Real Madrid, Lyon, Chelsea, and Barcelona want to sign this kid and bring him up through their youth systems...

Tell this kid that soccer should not be played after 12 years old.. when he's making millions by age 16

Well said on your first post Warrior. Couldn't have said it any better.

I find it very interesting when people get so concerned what other people do on their own time. Better yet, when they have to bad mouth what other people on their time WHEN IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THEIR OWN LIVES. These are more than likely gentlemen, if I may loosely use the term judging by their mastery of our own language, whose lives are so full of meaning that they have nothing better to do than stand around at their places of work and debate the many aspects of HS sports, the REAL ONES that is, while often criticizing the performances of HS athletes and the ignorance of every coach they've ever come across. Their lives are so full of meaning that HS sports, or just sports in general, encompass the entirety of their existence on Spaceship Earth. True giants of intellectual capacity.

Better yet, these are men so big & bad that they have to resort to anonymously slandering people he views as weaklings on an internet message board. Well if this makes you feel powerful, than all power you. If not, I suggest wearing a disguise, hiding in bushes and harassing 1st graders. Come on guys, didn't mommy & daddy show you enough love?

I guess I would understand these reactions if these men were kidknapped, hog-tied (that is if REAL MEN can be kidknapped & hog-tied) and forced to watch soccer. Man, maybe it's just me & my weak nature or maybe the "fairy lovin" in me but if I don't like something I don't watch it, buy it, read it (but you guys wouldn't know about that "reading thing" would you?) or participate in it and leave it alone. But again, what would personal choice have anything to do in a country founded on the principles of free thought & choice?

I also know that I worked with a guy my first couple years teaching that would purposely post on the soccer page of another sports site just to get us pansies wound up so that he could sit around with the rest of his intolerant caveman types and laugh at the reactions. I have a feeling that this might be a similar case. So in the immortal words of another famously intolerant American that wanted no one to have individual thoughts, "You won't have ToffeeMan to kick around anymore" because I wash my hands of this discussion.

See, that's fine Outspoken. No problem. Just don't watch. Why the need to slander those that do enjoy the game? I know that it will NEVER be a mainstream sport in this country. It will have its own niche and its own public. We're not threatening the national security of this country nor subverting democracy or capitalism. Just some cats that enjoy a game that many don't. What's all the fuss about? Leave us to our our inferior world & we'll try not to prance into the Realm of Real Men. Good enough?

I know I broke my Nixonian promise to leave this alone but... well, never been one to shut up when I should.

I think bucky is just mad cause boys soccer has its own category while he stews over the fact that boys roller hockey doesn't.

I think the new administrater better send some of the children to the big chair for timeout.

He is some good stats about of football vs soocer... The high school soccer game last 90 minutes with no time out ( unless you are subed out) and you need to run, pass, defend a
soccer field that is larger than a football field. The only time out is 5 minute break ( for all) at half time. In football the average high school game lasts 48 minutes of which some players only play offense or defense . The average play is 18 seconds and then players get a break. The average football player only plays 18 minutes .

When high school soccer is in playoffs most games usually go 120 minutes due to the competitive teams they play. At one of my sons' playoff games this last year a football
dad asked me when they get a break (first soocer he ever saw). I told him none unless they are subed out. His comment was that he doesnt know to many kids that play other sports that could do that. He now has a great respect for the game and come to many others since.
