They are almost close to getting Cordero as their new closer. Makes us better but we still need some starting pitching. I have heard that Freel and Hamilton are up on the blocks since they have Hopper and they believe Bruce to be ready next year to be called up. Not sure I agree with letting Hamilton go but they are speculating his injuries are a little worse than they are leading on to. Here is the article.

Cordero`s a stud and will have the Red more than people think. He`ll get an abundance of save opportunities in a Reds uni that`s for sure.

Getting him is a start, but they still have alot more to do if they want to be a divisional contender.

I like Freel but get something for him while he is worth something. We need pitchers in order to contend not nice guys unfortunately. I guess it ultimately depends on what we can get for them.

I am thinking back and believe that the Reds repeatedly were effective hitting Cordero in Great American Ballpark. That makes me think this may be a bad signing if he is subject to giving up the hits in GABP

Had Cordero on my fantasy team last year. He started off hotter than a firecracker then tailed off. He was very effective overall, but did have those short periods of time where he`d seem to struggle. Yeah, I don`t know how he`ll fair in the Great American Ballpark. That could be interesting, but in a park like that it would be interesting for almost any closer wouldn`t it?

I am really thinking they just need to bring in one of those softball pitchers to close games. I can see how they'd be more prone to ground balls given the release point.

Sign me up then. Do it about every weekend for our softball team. We are pretty decent too!! Can I pitch USSSA at them to throw them off a little?? whistling.gif

Ryan Freel needs to go. Norris Hopper and Jeff Keppinger both are better and cheaper and not injury prone. I like Freel but get rid of him while he has some value. Somebody else of value will have to be traded to get top line pitching. Josh Hamilton is that person. Get a quality pitcher for Hamilton while he still has high value. Sell him with the five tool label and forget to mention that he is 27 and injury prone as well. Like both Freel and Hamilton but if this team is to improve they gotta go. Come on Front Row, Freel hasn't done anything in two years and has been living off the hustle hype the whole time. Hopper and Keppy hustle just as much and aren't injury prone.

The Reds absolutely have to move both Freel and Griffey if they want to win next year. I don't care if we get a rosin bag, and a bucket of ball for them, you have to move them for salary reasons alone.

My ideal situation for next year

Outfield
Bruce
Dunn
Hopper
Hamilton
Votto in a pinch

Infield
EE
Gonzo
Phillips
Votto-Cantu

Utility Keppinger

Starters
Harang
Arroyo
Bailey
Cueto

I am also all for moving EE, Hamilton, and you still have Hatteburg for a good starting pitcher even though I don't think they will trade EE.
I think the Reds will be willing to move anyone on the roster with the exception of Philips,Bruce, Harang and now Cordero

Francisdo Cordero signing = Eric Milton signing

Agree to needing to move Freel. You aren't going to get much for him, though. If you can move Edwin Encarnacion and put Keppinger at third, that'd be good, too, but doubtful to happen again. I think you hold off on trading Griffey yet because you know Adam Dunn is not likely to be around after this season. In all seriousness, do you think he wants to come back to a team that is ALWAYS talking about trading him and go through that for another couple years? He'd rather take his chances on the free agent market and go somewhere that'll pay him and give him a no-trade clause so that he isn't hearing his name in trade rumors every June and July.

I don't know how you can say he's like Milton...two different players completely

Another thing...Dunn will make with incentives around 15-16 million.... thats pretty good money and he already has a no trade clause in his contract. He can only be traded to a team of his choosing... he's not going anywhere... I actually think they will lock him up "long term"

Reds outfield in 2010 will be:
Jay Bruce...francise center fielder
Josh Hamilton.... unless he's moved for a starter
Drew Stubbs...two years away
Norris Hopper.....utility
Adam Dunn....left fielder for 8 more years....deal with it.
Go Bucks!!

I say their signings are similar because Cordero didn't fare too well away from the friendly confines of Miller Park. When he comes to GABP, his ERA is around 6.00 and the opposition is batting around .400! Here's hoping he is a fix for the Reds bullpen woes, but he's gonna have to prove himself a better pitcher in more difficult conditions as opposed to what he got in Milwaukee.

Yes, Dunn does have a no-trade clause in his contract...until like June. This is the final year of his contract. No more options to be picked up by the Reds. I just don't think he's going to want to keep putting up with the yearly rumors of his trade come the trade deadline, especially if the Reds aren't competitive this year. If the Reds are competitive, he may want to look into locking himself here long term. If not, he'll probably want out.

Cordero road woes

The one bad split that really jumps out on Franciso Cordero is road vs home.
In 41 innings at home his ERA was 1.09 in '07
In 22 innings on the road his ERA was 6.55 in '07

I think a couple of bad outings that inflated his road numbers.

*24 road appearances covering 22 innings
*17 of the 24 appearances he yielded no earned runs
*2 appearances he allowed 1 earned run
*2 appearances he allowed 2 earned runs (no HR's)
*2 appearances he allowed 3 earned runs (no HR's)
*1 appearance he allowed 4 earned runs (no HR's)

So in 19 of 24 appearances he allowed either 0 or 1 earned runs.

Overall home and away

The league hit just .218 against Cordero.
He k'd 12.22 per 9 innings last year.
He allowed just 4 homers in 63 innings.

He doesn't have health issues. He's been on the DL just twice....'01 for tightness in his back....'02 for shoulder strain.

Now what do you think??????????

I think he's gonna be playing in Great American Ballpark and that place is not kind to pitchers.

Don't get me wrong, I hope he succeeds. Damn, the Reds need a winning season and to get back to the playoffs SOON!!! But GABP is just so rough on pitchers I have to be skeptical when any new pitcher comes in and has such a high ERA in the ballpark he is going to, let alone on the road period!

I think GABP isn't as bad as people think.... I just think the REDS pitching staff has been so bad that of course it's going to look like the ballpark is hitter friendly. I do think the ball carries well at GABP, thats one of the reasons i like Cordero, he's doesn't give up many homers and his groundball to flyball ratio is pretty good.... I think this signing is a very positive sign from Reds management

Oh, it is definitely a sign that they are looking to improve. Better than signing a bunch of "has beens" like Mike Stanton and Rheal Cormier.

Winter meetings started yesterday.... sounds like the REDS are trying hard to move Hamilton and Edwin Encarnacion for satarting pitching

Not in love with Stubbs so far. He is proving at this point to be closer to BJ Szymanski than to Jay Bruce.
Stubbs, 2007 in Single A Dayton who is 23 years old (1st round draft pick)
.270 BA, 12 HR, 146 Strikeouts. 23 SB with 15 CS

Szymanski in High A Sarasota who is 25 years old (2nd or 3rd rd draft pick)
.246 BA, 14 HR, 153 SO. 9 SB with 4 CS
