I am the DIII NWO Poll Rep again this year. As always, I ask for help with results. I will be keeping a list of teams with updated scores & records as the season goes on starting tomorrow.

Starting in Week 2 or 3 (2 I believe, need to double-check) I will be asking for as many NWO coaches as possible to submit their versions of the teams they believe make up the Top 5 DIII teams every Friday. After I get these lists, I will rank each team based on a point system (6 pts for 1st, 4 pts for 2nd, 3 pts for 3rd, 2 pts for 4th, 1 pt for 5th). Then I send that list to the State Poll representative (even though a team may make the Top 5, doesn't neccessarily qualify for them for State ranking, it may only be 1 or 2 teams, or none, based on team strength/ quality of district, etc). After he gets the lists form each district, he sends the statewide nominees back to each District Rep & we then compile our State Top 10, send that back to the State Rep who then compiles the results on a point system like the one described earlier, only for 10 teams instead of 5.

The last few seasons that I've done this I have only had the help of 5, maybe 6 coaches, meaning that the poll has not been as democratic as it can be. I want this to be the decision of the many rather than a select few so I'm posting this message here as well the email that I will send to every registered NWO DIII coach with the hope that more coaches will see/ hear about this process to get as much participation as possible. PLEASE CONSIDER HELPING!!! Coaches only...I cannot use nominations of the "general public."

If any coaches read this please go to the OSSCA website (ossca.org) & enter your schedule, team players & be sure to post results. This is an easy process (you need to enter login info first & get a password from the webmaster) & greatly eases this overall process. Once you do this you can check player stats, see your players ranked state-wide & access all sorts of statistical info. It's pretty cool but the process only works as well as the info submitted...some coaches don't submit anything thus muddying the waters.

Good luck to everyone & here's hoping for a safe season for everyone.

These are the games I have for tomorrow:

Riverdale vs Liberty-Benton 5 PM
Lima Central Catholic vs Temple Christian School 5 PM
Ottoville vs Van Wert 5 PM
Ottawa-Glandorf vs Wauseon 5 PM

If I missed any please update (these were listed on the ossca site).

Continental 1-0 (beat Spencerville 7-0)

Kalida 1-0 (beat Wapak 1-0)

Being completely objective here old boy & only going with records. So until Stritch loses, as the Everton fans sing "they Shall Not Be Moved."

First week of school & things have been hectic so I plan to have updates by the end of today's workday.

Other Scores I saw from Aug 26:

Liberty-Benton 3
Van Buren 1

Ft. Jennings 1
Bluffton 0
(This was decided by shootout because it is part of a 4-team tournament, so really it would be 0-0 tie, correct?)

Elida 4
LCC 1

Ottawa-Glandorf 1
Napoleon 1

Upper Sandusky 7
Clyde 2

WOW, you've GOT to be kidding. This is a total surprise. I never would have called this one.
You get to the NEXT level only by being successful at the CURRENT one. Play today's game first, enjoy the victory, then and only then, look ahead!

Oh, woe to my Wildcats, we tie again!

Kalida 0
Shawnee 0

Another night where we simply try to run everyone over going to goal. Forget soccer, we keep playing the rockem-sockem style instead of using any gamesmanship! Every year we bemoan our inability to score, but we don't change! We thump everyone who makes a run on our goal (and this usually gives us a shut-out), but we don't establish an offense, or a strategy. Instead, we simply sprint 5-6 players at our opponents goal and hope we score!

How many cards were issued tonight? 7 maybe? We have the talent to play soccer, but we don't! We can pulverize most smaller teams (smaller in stature) on our schedule and win up to 75-80% of our games this way. But, come playoffs, Ottoville passes around us, scores, and we lose. That's the reality of it! We need to revamp our style. Bring in some offensive assistant coaches and start playing tactical soccer. Our games look like a track meet mixed with onside kicks from football.

We have the talent, we have the athletes, and we have the community support! But, can we change???

Be blunt, be honest, I/we can take it..........

You really want an honest opinion huh?

First, your analysis is childishly simplistic and in many ways inaccurate.

For the record, 4 players went in the book tonight, 2 from Kalida and 2 from Shawnee. Kalida's holding midfielder deserved at least three, but somehow stayed out of the book. Credit Shawnee, they always have a pretty stout defense and tonight was no different. For most of the game, Shawnee kept 6 players back and were content to just counter attack.

The problem lies with the players. Kalida has NO forwards, no goal scorers, no one with great pace stretch a defense, no one to break down a defense off the dribble. Kalida plays pretty well with the ball through the midfield and do well in keeping possession, but in the offensive third is where things break down. The players themselves have no clue what to do in the final third. No creativity, no anticipation, poor decision making.

If Kalida had a single true forward or even a creative offensive midfielder to run the offense through, they would be extremely tough to beat. As it is, they will be tough to beat, but at the same time they will find it tough to win.

Kalida is a very physical team. Part of it is size, part of it is a few of their players play out of control

As far as the tourney goes, Kalida hasn't handled the pressure well in recent years and have lost to teams whom they were clearly superior to. Take last year. They dominate Ottoville in the regular season. They go up to goal in the tourney, but fail to put Ottoville away. Ottoville scores on a goal against the run of play right before the half and Kalida's players deflate and Ottoville plays inspired to get the game winner. That happens in the tourney. I'm sure Kalida has benefited from this during some their successful tourney runs.

The style is fine. The defense is fine. The lack of any offensive minded players or at least minimally opportunistic is not.

What can you change? Oh, I dunno, get a striker?

former coach: No, I'm not calling Czubik out, no one can challenge his winning percent, or his ability to get the most out of his players, or even his previous deep-tournament runs. I am just whining about the lack of goal scoring for the past few years and looking for some solutions?!

dkusma96: Much of what you say is true! However, the Kahle cousins have the capacity to be GREAT finishers! In fact, I don't know of an area coach who wouldn't want them as their star forwards (although Jeremy plays mostly outside midfield). I still think our, "romp & stomp down the field style" doesn't allow for setting up a good offensive attack.

I could be wrong, feel free to disagree............

Dissent, I didnt think you were just giving you a hard time. I do agree with your feelings on Kalida over the past several years. Where has their firepower gone? I think they have talent, but they focus on defense a lot and games tend to be on the rough side.

A 0-0 game with no shots would be a rough one to watch.

Oh come now DISSENT, ALL of what I say is true. biggrin.gif

There is no "romp & stomp down the field style". Kalida plays aggressively and commits too many stupid and clumsy fouls.

Physical play has NOTHING to do with having collective brain freeze when the ball is within 30 yards of the goal. There's no hold up play waiting for numbers to push forward. No sense of urgency when they do have the advantage. They don't attack defenders with pace. Possession is frequently given away cheaply. No movement without the ball. Too much vertical play. Except set pieces, service into the box is poor and aimless. To much running to the ball in the box, no one makes the runs off the ball to the posts or space to get the garbage goals.

I have no idea who the Kahle kids are, but there are NO "star forwards" or great finishers (I would think that 240 minutes and ONE goal would make that pretty clear) that area coaches would lust for. They may want some of Kalida's size and athleticism.

Probably about right. As of now there appears quite a gulf between the first two sides and the last three. You could probably juggle 3-5 in any order.

Van Buren isn't impressive and Miller City is not very good.

No love for your defending district champions....? 2-0-1, out of the gate minus 3 starters. 6 Sophs have seen the field so far. Rockman and Co. seem to be keeping things together. Yes former still DIII

Here's mine based on schedule:

1) O-G (ok Wauseon, but Napoleon and the Ft are quality)
2) Kalida (Beat wapak, tie VB and Shawnee that is solid)
3) Temple (LCC, Wapak not bad and St Marys)
4) Ottawa-Hills (Loss to D1 anthony wayne
5) Ottoville (Could be the shocker in the dist this year)

Ottoville 3-0 (beat Van Wert 1-0, beat Riverdale 6-0, beat Bryan 4-1)
Lima Temple Christian 3-0 (beat LCC 4-1, beat Wapak 3-0, beat St. Mary's 2-0)
Continental 1-0-1 (beat Spencerville 7-0, drew Defiance 2-2)
Ottawa Glandorf 2-0-1 (beat Wauseon 2-0, drew Napoleon 1-1, beat Ft Jennings 3-0)
Kalida 1-0-2 (beat Wapak 1-0, drew Van Buren 0-0, drew Shawnee 0-0)
Cory Rawson 1-0 (beat Pandora Gilboa 4-2)

OK, I've dropped some teams with one loss...debated on keeping LB because Lake returns a strong team (seen them first-hand) that will likely be DII Regionalist & that's why they were still up. No bias from me here...if they keep getting results like they have they'll be back on the board.

I'm trying to keep the waters clear right now & as a poll contributor, undefeated is undefeated regardless if some think early wins are against weaker teams (you can only play the teams in front of you). I also dropped O-H for right now even though a loss to Anthony Wayne, especially a close one, sits pretty darn good with me but like I said earlier trying to keep the waters clear. These teams with losses to strong teams will pop back up again as the season sorts itself out.
